Beyonce Indulges in Beyonce in New HBO Documentary

Nothing says humility like creating a 90-minute documentary about yourself for HBO.

That’s why Beyonce put out “Life is But a Dream,” her video-montage memoir about how great she is, which premiered this past weekend on February 16th.

Yes, it was self-indulgent. Yes, it was ridiculous. And yes, I watched it. All 90 minutes of it. You win again, Beyonce.

I guess what bothered the most about the whole thing was Beyonce trying to convince me that she is just like the rest of us plebeians.  Yes, I watched her HBO special, but I watched it 2 days later when I found it for free on a sketchy third-party website because I can’t afford cable.

Beyonce telling me she’s just like me as she flies in her private jet (no, really, that happened) just rubs me the wrong way.

Don’t get me wrong – I love Beyonce as much as the next gay. She is an unbelievable performer, and she did say some pretty enlightening things about the state of the music industry and the detrimental instant-gratification single releases the internet and iTunes have spawned.

But I guess I would like her even more if she didn’t pretend like she was one of us. Oprah just deemed her the “Preeminent Mistress of the Universe” (creepy), and you know if Oprah says it, it must be true. Right?
