Emmanuel Women’s Basketball Win GNAC Championship

The Emmanuel Women’s basketball team won their 7th straight GNAC (Greater Northeast Athletic Conference) championship this Saturday at the Jean Yawkey Center, with a 68-45 win over Suffolk.

The Emmanuel girls never trailed during the game. Suffolk trailed by 4 points at one point early in the first half but never got any closer. The Saints won in their usual fashion with every player contributing in some way.

Senior captains, Fiona O’Dwyer and Laura Benvenuto lead the team in scoring with 15 points apiece. Ten players registered at least 2 points on the team, proving Coach Andy Yosinoff utilizes his entire team. O’Dwyer also lead the team in rebounds, pulling down 12 to give her yet another double-double. Sophomore Britni Mikulanecz played her usual lock down defense collecting a team high 6 steals. Mikulanecz was just as active on the offensive end of the court dishing out 9 assists. Junior, Liz Daley was the only other player to register double digit points with 10 off the bench. Daley went 2 of 3 behind the arch, showing off her sweet shooting touch.

Emmanuel played some suffocating defense all afternoon, forcing Suffolk to commit 22 turnovers. The Saints limited themselves to only 12 turnovers. The Saints’ height advantage played a large role in the win as they were able to control the boards and alter many of Suffolk’s shots.

The girls finished the season with a record of 23 wins and 5 loses, along with an impressive record of 12 wins and 0 loses in conference play. Emmanuel’s win earns them an automatic bid in the NCAA Division III tournament. Seedings for the tournament will be released early this week with the first game possibly being played before the weekend.

Editor’s Note: The Saints are now scheduled to head to Rochester, NY this Friday to play the University of Rochester in the first round of the NCAA Division III Women’s Basketball Tournament. Check out for future information.
