Maybe it’s just me, but I have a really hard time listening to an artists’ music after they have proven themselves to be a horrible person (I still cringe any time the Chris Brown remix of “Cake” comes on).
After she started Twitter feuds with 13 other musicians over the past year, I’m finally starting to find it unbearable to listen to Azealia Banks. While her music may be carefree and fun, her unmatchable ego is anything but.
In January she incited an Internet firestorm after calling Perez Hilton (ugh) a “messy faggot” (UGH). She backpedalled by saying that a faggot is “not” a gay man, but instead any “male who acts like a female,” and that Hilton is “worse than a girl.” Would you like a side of misogyny with that homophobia? Then she half-heartedly apologized to everyone but Hilton (whom she apparently still wished would “kill [him]self”).
After managing to keep her mouth shut for a whole month, Banks’ attitude returned on Thursday, and I’m starting to think that its not just some façade, but that she actually acts like an evil, 14 year old girl in real life.
She attempted to put out a remix of Baauer’s “Harlem Shake” track after he had asked her not to, so he swiftly had the song removed from her SoundCloud. She responded by calling him a pussy and a faggot, and Hilton tweeted at her, criticizing her bad attitude.
And then out pops “faggot,” again. Twice. So much for her being sorry.
This time, according to Banks, faggot is a metonym for “liar, backstabber, coward,” (Apparently the Banks Dictionary has a lot of editing in 2013) and that Hilton “wished he had a pussy.” Oh, he should also be “sacrificed to the sun god.” What?
To complicate matters, Banks considers herself to be bisexual. So here we have a dark-skinned, queer, female in the rap game throwing out direct homophobic remarks at an openly gay male and trying to justify it. Yeah, it doesn’t make any sense to me either.
It’s NOT anything like her saying nigga; she’s black, and the word is known to have been re-appropriated in black culture to be a casual, or even positive, thing. Faggot has not received the same treatment, nor has the word has never been used as an attack on her, so she has no right to “choose” what it means.
Banks frequently comments on the fact that her fan base is mainly comprised of gay males. She considers herself part of the gay community. So why on Earth does she think its okay to preach this kind of hateful bullshit to her 300,000 Twitter followers?
With her album that was supposedly being “finished” during the summer still not out yet, and the lead single being delayed again as of last week, it seems like she should focus on her music rather than worrying about her online repertoire of being a bitch.
Listen to her Harlem Shake remix here, and love/hate it, or whatever:
