Seth MacFarlane Offends at the Oscars, Somehow People are Shocked

The Academy Awards are often dubbed the “biggest night in Hollywood.” A-listers and film industry elites gather to give each other awards and congratulate each other on being awesome. Sounds innocent enough.

However this year, Family Guy creator Seth MacFarlane was brought on to host the show. If controversy was what the Academy was looking for, they picked the right guy.

Since the show aired live on Sunday, February 24, there’s been a huge backlash regarding MacFarlane’s hosting gig. Both professional critics and enraged fans on Twitter have been speaking out about his “offensive” humor during the show, which included a whole lot of misogyny, anti-Semitism, and a rather tasteless domestic violence joke referencing Chris Brown and Rihanna.

The Anti-Defamation League and the Parents Television Council are among those who have adamantly spoken out against MacFarlane’s performance, calling his humor “vulgar” and “juvenile.”

While I don’t condone much of what MacFarlane said – I truly do think he crossed the line at certain points – is anyone really shocked? Anyone who has seen even one episode of Family Guy must surely know that this kind of humor is what Seth McFarlane has built his empire around. Thinking he was going to change his game for the Oscars is foolish. That’s his brand.

People should really be pointing their fingers at the Academy and the people who cast him for the ceremony. They clearly wanted controversy, and they got it. If no one was raising their eyebrows at the initial decision to put MacFarlane up there as the host, then that’s really the bigger problem here.

It seems to me like the Oscars were trying to pull a similar stunt that the Golden Globes pulled a couple years back when they had the always-offensive Ricky Gervais host; it doesn’t matter if people are outraged, as long as they’re talking. Right?

Totally agree! Although I have to say, the “We Saw Your Boobs” song was probably my favorite part of the show…
