The Man Behind the Meme: Meet Scumbag Steve

It was an innocent picture taken by his mom that launched Beantown local Blake Boston into internet infamy. And while at first he resented the attention, this man behind one of the internet’s most popular memes is now embracing his reputation as that guy we love to hate.

You probably know him as the vacant-faced teenager wearing a sideways fitted hat in the viral macro meme Scumbag Steve. If you have been living under a rock lately, a meme is a picture or image overlaid with text describing a certain pattern of behavior.  In the case of Scumbag Steve, this text chronicles the harmless, yet obnoxious antics of a teenage douchebag.

We all know the type. He eats one toaster strudal but uses all four icing packets. He abandons his shopping cart in an empty parking spot. He’s harmless, sure, but also infuriating.

In 2012 Boston released a music video parodying his internet persona and several more gems have followed. While his website promises new material every Thursday, Boston (in a scumbag move of his own) hasn’t delivered. Still, there is definitely enough on his Youtube page to help you kill an afternoon.
