21 and Over: Well…This Happened

In the words read by Max Bialystock, “It was shocking, outrageous, insulting … and I loved every minute of it.”

Or to be accurate I loved every minute of it up until the last half hour, when it made a tiny whoopsy in its trousers and decided to play melodrama for about twenty minutes before getting back on the happy train.

It’s a bro-comedy movie and, yeah, it’s pretty freaking hilarious. Miller and Casey (Miles Teller and Skylar Astin) are a couple of college guys who went to high school together, reunited to take their third amigo Jeff Chang (Justin Chon) out for his 21st birthday, which happens to be the day before a med school interview set up by Jeff’s hyper-aggressive dad (Francois Chau). You can guess the kind of hilarity that ensues.

Or can you? Actually, you can’t.

There were literally only two jokes I saw coming, one of them because I saw it in the trailer and the other because it involved something that happened earlier in the movie and I just thought “OK, we’re gonna go through the exact same motions as that other thing that happened.” And no, that’s not a spoiler because if you’re paying attention at all the right moments, you too will see it coming at you a mile away.

There is a dramatic drop in tone towards the end of the movie, as Jeff has to fess up to his friends about all the things that have changed since they started college and boy, does it get depressing. This was not a deal-breaker though. It only lasts for ten or twenty minutes and then the movie goes back to the crazy hijinks that totally shouldn’t have happened in the first place.

So yeah, this movie is nothing special and you can be totally forgiven for skipping it.

But come on. Live a little.
