Model UN team attends University of Chicago conference

This past weekend, Emmanuel College Model United Nations (ECMUN) sent a twelve student travel team to compete in the 16th University of Chicago Model United Nations Conference (ChoMUN).

The team went shoulder-to-shoulder with the best and brightest students of debate and international affairs in the country, competing against schools such as Florida International University, Harvard, and Georgetown University. Committees ranged from the Privy Council of His Majesty King Henry VIII to Defending Americasimulating political conflicts from across history.

Unlike other conferences, ChoMUN is a “crisis” conference, meaning that while students study the background of their committees, they must also be equipped to handle the curveballs the crisis staff throws at them throughout the conference, and incorporate these crises into the legislation constructed throughout the weekend. Crisis updates come sporadically and, this weekend, ranged from wars with Scotland to the Dalai Lama being killed in a drone strike. (Fictitious, of course.)

Anthony Andronico (’15) was the only ECMUN member to receive an award: Verbal Commendation, his second award this school year.

Annually, ChoMUN marks the end of competition season, as well as many seniors’ last conferences. This year signified the end of Alexandra Murray ’13’s ECMUN career, a bittersweet closing for the team. Murray joined the team in the fall of her junior year, and has since competed in eight conferences.

“Model UN has allowed me to expand my networking and public speaking skills, which have prepared me for real-life professional situations. I have learned to think and problem solve quickly and work with my peers for solutions. The bonds of friendship I have made are unlike any other and the memories will last forever. The personal and professional experiences I have had through Model UN will travel with me throughout my life.”

The team is also saying goodbye to Ian Robinson (’13) who served as this year’s executive board president and has been on the team all four of his years at Emmanuel.

The team, while looking forward to the summer recess, is mindful of next fall, with conferences beginning as early as October. Any student wishing to learn more or join the team should contact next year’s executive board president, Nathan Benevides at benevidesn@emmanuel.edu, or Vice President, Monica Busch, at buschm@emmanuel.edu.
