Mr. Emmanuel 2013 is Crowned

After a week of devastation, fear and celebration, EC needed a lighthearted event before the push of final exams. On Tuesday April 23, it came in the form of Mr. Emmanuel, EC’s annual male beauty pageant where the guys on campus duke it out in sports wear, talent and formal wear for bragging rights, a sash and of course, a crown.

Sponsored by C.A.S.E and MC’d by OSAMP’s Damita Davis and the English Department’s Dr. Lisa Stepanski, the night was all about the men — while also being for the women as well. The theme for this year’s Mr. Emmanuel competition was Fight for the Cure, benefitting the Breast Cancer Research Foundation. The contestants competing for the crown this year were Jamie De Pena ’13, Cam Horack ’16, Greg Dowler ’15, Eddie Fisher ’16, Tyler Gravelle ’16, Brian Burns ’16 and Grant Kuehl ’15.

The competition started off with a moment of silence for the events of the past week, then segued into a dance mash-up featuring Gloria Gaynor’s I Will Survive, Survivor by Destiny’s Child and Christina Aguilera’s Fighter, choreographed by Amanda Sheehan ’13.

The night continued on with sports wear, where each of the contestants strutted in their favorite sports attire from golf to baseball, beach wear and swim wear, basketball and soccer. The men went on to compete on talent, with some choosing to showcase their vocal talents and dance moves while others chose to show off their more unique talents. And finally was formal wear, where each of the contestants chose one or two, or 13 in Jamie’s case, of their favorite ladies to escort them and then answer questions from the judges, like “What is your daily routine?”, “What would you do if you didn’t have a question?”, and “Imagine you’re in your happy place. Where are you?”.

The night also featured routines from Emmanuel’s all-girl a Capella group, For Good Measure and from the

Emmanuel College Dance Team. Each group drew much applause from the crowd.

Finally, the night ended with the crowning of the winners. While Mr. Emmanuel was the main title, there were two other titles awarded: Mr. Philanthropy and Mr. Congeniality. Mr. Philanthropy was awarded to Cam Horack, who raised the most amount of money for the Breast Cancer Research Foundation. Four-time contestant Jamie De Pena won Mr. Congeniality, which was voted amongst the guys as the one with the best attitude during the preparations. And finally, the honor of Mr. Emmanuel was awarded by the judges to Brian Burns. His attitude throughout the competition was a highlight of the night, from his Michael Phelps swim wear, to reading aloud his Hub editorial piece about yoga along with a demonstration, and his snappy formal wear outfit and his quippy answer to “What is your daily routine?”, which included the phrase “Honey dew or honey don’t.”
