College Announces Ad Hoc Committee on Smoking/Tobacco Policy

In a recent portal announcement, Emmanuel has revealed who is on the much-awaited ad hoc committee established to address the smoking and tobacco policy on campus. The list, sourced from Government and Community Relations, includes a number of students, as well various members of the administration, staff, and a few faculty members.

This is the most recent development in a series of discussions that have been taking place on the topic. Most recently, a few members of the EC community attended a symposium on tobacco policies on college campuses.

The debate seems to oscillate between EC potentially going tobacco-free, which would ban all tobacco products, or going smoke-free, which would not include products like chewing tobacco.

The list of people sitting on the ad hoc committee is as follows:

  •         Jacqueline Alfonso Barry, Assistant Professor of Psychology
  •         Chris Baker ’14, Cross Country/Track + Field
  •         Justin Byers ’15, Men’s Lacrosse Team
  •         Danielle Christy ’14
  •         Michael Conte, Assistant Director of Residence Life, Resident Director of St. Joseph Hall
  •         Kristen Conroy, Associate Vice President for Operations
  •         Lauren Davis, NP, Director of Health Services
  •         Erin Farmer Noonan, Director of Human Resources
  •         Jack Kelly, Director of Campus Safety
  •         Linda Lin, Associate Professor of Psychology and Department Chair
  •         Adnan Malek ’16
  •         Elaria Meshreky ’14
  •         Maria Parisi, BSN graduate, Smoking Cessation Nurse Consultant, South Shore Hospital
  •         Amy Stewart, Communications Manager, Office of Marketing Communications
  •         Lori Sullivan, Senior Assistant to the President
  •         Sarah Welsh, Vice President for Government + Community Relations

According to the portal announcement, the committee is expected to make a recommendation before the President’s Cabinet by April 2014. The announcement also recommends reaching out to any member of the committee to share your opinions on the issue.
