Because of Snow Days, Make Up Classes Scheduled

On February 17, the office of Academic Affairs announced via the portal that classes will have make up sessions, due to the five cancelled schooldays.

William Leonard, Dean of Arts and Sciences, outlined the make up schedule:

  • Monday classes usually at 2:50pm will meet Friday March 20 from 3:30pm to 4:45pm.
  • Monday classes usually at 4:15pm will meet Friday March 27 also from 3:30 to 4:45pm.

Reportedly, the decision was made in collaboration with the office of Student Affairs and the Registrar to come up with these days. Academic Advising, the Faculty Senate Chair, and the Department Chairs were also consulted.

Instead of having no classes Easter Monday, April 6, Monday classes will run, but only for those beginning at 12pm and later. Classes that would meet before 12pm will not be made up, Leonard said.

“We don’t have to make them up based upon our NEASC rules,” Leonard said. “We’re right at the cusp, if we lose another day, it could be a different story.”

Monday classes usually at 6:00pm will meet Friday April 10 from 3:30pm to 4:45pm.

“We chose these Fridays because it avoids the Friday before Spring Break, the Friday before Easter, and the Friday before Patriots Day weekend,” Leonard said.

Tuesday classes will be made up Thursday April 23, a day usually reserved for distinction. Distinction will instead be held the evenings of some of the days that week. “Probably Tuesday and Wednesday of that week” Leonard said.

The goal of this scheduling, Leonard said, was to avoid Saturday classes and taking away Monday holidays.

It is up to the professor to enforce attendance at these make up days.

“If a professor was able to provide direct faculty instruction for one of the missed days, through ECLearn or other ways…they don’t have to make up that time and they’ll communicate that to the class,” Leonard said.

Emmanuel students cross-registered at other COF schools should receive information on make up days at those colleges.
