Letter to the Editor: Africana Studies Literature at the Cardinal Cushing Library

To the Editor:

Your Emmanuel College librarians have been following the Hub coverage of the issues presented by the BSU to the Administration. We welcome the input of our students on Library collections, because your engagement and interest show that we are doing our jobs well.

I wish to update the Community on our response to comments regarding Library resources on the African experience and diaspora. On December 1 we added a new Research Guide entitled “Africana Studies” on the Library website.

All of the subscription material in the Guide was already available in the Library, so this was an opportunity to promote existing resources and add some open-access material from the web. We encourage all students to explore this new Research Guide.

We are in touch with the Board of the BSU and will follow up with a meeting early in the spring semester to discuss specific needs in this area. Today’s Hub mentioned that students were requesting $3,000 of library funds dedicated to literature on the African diaspora and it will be during the spring meetings with BSU representatives that we will discuss specific needs. We hope that this will be just the beginning of an ongoing dialog.

Finally, we encourage all students to approach us whenever you perceive a lack of material in any area of the library’s collections. To that end, please feel free to contact us with your book suggestions or other comments using the Your Suggestions link on the Library home page.
