On Friday, April 29, a demonstration will be held on the quad in regards to Sexual Assault Awareness month in order to spread awareness on Emmanuel’s campus.
The event, organized by Emily Neeves ’19 with the help of Assistant Director & Residence Director of St. Ann Hall and Notre Dame Campus Gretchenrae Callanta, will be held from 2:30pm to 4:30pm. Emmanuel students as well as students of the Colleges of the Fenway and the Boston area are invited to attend the event.
The event will feature to-be-determined speakers, a ribbon-pinning where students can wear a teal ribbon, the color for sexual assault, to show they stand in solidarity with the survivors, and a pledge that students can sign signifying that they acknowledge sexual assault is a problem on college campuses.
Neeves is a survivor of sexual assault on Emmanuel’s campus. Her experience dealing with the Administration in regards to her assault was not positive. This prompted her to speak to other students on campus with similar experiences and staff and faculty members who prompted her to hold the event.
“Ultimately, I really want awareness from the college and students, staff, and faculty and just everybody to know that this happens to many students, and not just acknowledging that it happens in college but acknowledging that it happens in general and that the stigma of it is unnecessary.” Neeves said about her goals for the event.
“Next semester, I really want more of these things [TED Talks and information about consent] out there, but I really want the college to put them out there along with modifying their process because my experience with it was negative.” Neeves said.
Last semester, the Communications Club held a 1 in 5 event centered around a conversation on sexual assault and the way in which Emmanuel handles it. From this event, a list of demands was created to present to Title IX Coordinator Erin Farmer-Noonan and other appropriate administrators.
