Dr. Mark Flynn is Emmanuel’s newest Assistant Professor of Communication and Media Studies within the College’s English Department.

Flynn has a PhD in Communication and Media Studies from Bowling Green State University in Ohio and he previously taught for four years at South Carolina’s Coastal Carolina University.

The Hub sat down with Flynn to better understand his role on campus and learn more about what brought him here.

“In four years I got to see freshmen graduate, so that was really powerful,” Flynn said of his time at Coastal Carolina. “That’s my favorite part of the job, connecting with the students.”

When asked how he likes Emmanuel, Flynn said, “It’s been wonderful.”

He spoke of his thoughts about EC to date, “I’ve had such a good experience. Students, faculty, and staff; everyone has been so welcoming.”

Flynn elaborated that he was excited to see an environment that cultivates students’ eagerness and curiosity towards learning.

Flynn related Emmanuel to his own undergraduate experience at Roger Williams University in Rhode Island. He recognized professors connecting with students, something that he saw as being very important in an undergraduate education.

“What I was looking for and what I found in Emmanuel are professors that cared really deeply about student development, and engaging the students in the classroom but also on an individual basis,” said Flynn. “That is something that the small school has a lot going for it.”

Growing up in Western Massachusetts, Flynn said to him, “Boston was Rome.” When it comes to the city, he said he “absolutely loves it.” Some of his favorite parts about Boston—not having to worry about his car, taking public transportation, and being surrounded by culture.

When he isn’t teaching, he enjoys absorbing media of all forms as well. His favorite book is Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck. His favorite movies are Dumb and Dumber, Silver Lining’s Playbook, and Shawshank Redemption. His favorite television show is Seinfeld and his favorite commercial is the Geico commercial featuring Marco Polo.

A message Flynn wished to portray to all of Emmanuel College, “My door is always open.”
