A Look Into EC’s Dance Team

Emmanuel College is home to over 100 clubs and organizations, one of them being the Dance Team.

EC Dance Team has been an established competitive team for more than eight years, growing with each year. The team includes captains Gabriel Taveras ’17, Amanda Katsarikas ’17, and Shannon Brady ’17 along with 18 other talented dancers.

“We are a hip-hop team. Whenever we go to competitions we compete as a hip-hop team, we always compete in a hip-hop college category,” said Taveras.

The Dance Team preforms at all of the men’s and women’s basketball games, and will preform at any Emmanuel College event they have the opportunity to.

Last year they were able to dance at Big Man on Campus, and at the end of every school year they preform in Showcase that is open to all performers in the Boston area.

“At Showcase it is really nice because most of the people on our team have actually been trained in ballet, pointe, classical, lyrical, contemporary, tap, jazz, anything that isn’t hip-hop. Some of them are cheerleaders and they just wanted to dance, so it is nice at the end of the school year we have the opportunity to give people a well-rounded look at Dance Team to show we can do other styles, too.” said Taveras.

The team also competes at the Emmanuel Dance Competition and UDA, a regional competition. Their most recent performance was at the Hatch Shell on the Esplanade for breast cancer awareness. They take part in this show each year.

“Our coaches will choreograph things, for example our breast cancer performance at the Hatch Shell. They will choreograph some and then the captains will do some. We also encourage our students from our team to actually choreograph some, too.” said Taveras.

EC’s Dance Team loves being involved on campus and each member has a strong, evident passion for dance.

The team’s next performance is November 12 at the Reggie Lewis Center.
