UPDATE: As of April 25, the new fundraising total for the 2016-17 Dance Marathon is $133,312.43, $2,639.90 more than was announced last month at Dance Marathon.

The sixth year of Emmanuel College Dance Marathon (ECDM) marks another record breaking fundraiser, raising $130,672.53. On Sunday, March 26, students gathered in the Jean Yawkey Center (JYC) for the all night fund raiser.

From 10 p.m. to 10 a.m. students participated in ping pong, foosball, human Hungry Hungry Hippos, and Zumba to keep everyone active and alert. There were tables where students could write cards to current patients. Posters, sticky notes, and fliers on the walls reminded dancers to ‘stand for those who can’t.’ During the morale dance, performed at the top of every hour, featured students chanting ‘FTK,’ which stands for ‘For The Kids.’

“We’re working toward an awesome mission. Everyone here clearly really cares about the kids and cares about reaching the goal [raising $125,000]. So far it’s a great event! I’m having a ton of fun, and I’m definitely excited to see the kids in the morning,” said Hannah Carr ’20.

At the end of 12 hours, students greeted and high-five the kids from Boston Children’s Hospital. In the back of the gym, the mother of two of the children, Joey, age eight, and Evan, age 5, spoke about her sons’ frequent hospitalization at Boston Children’s. Like the other children, both boys faced many health challenges in the first years of their lives. They are doing well now due to the diligent care provided by the hospital staff.

The student coordinators lined up to reveal whether or not ECDM had reached its goal of raising $125,000. Each coordinator had a poster with a number on the back, turned around so that the crowd could not initially see. The students then flipped the posters around, revealing that Emmanuel had in fact raised $130,672.53. This is $5,672.53 over the 2017 goal, and around $10,000 more than the previous year.

On March 25, ECDM had only raised $101,000 of their initial $125,000 goal. In only one day, they raised over $30,000. In beating their goal this year, ECDM has now raised almost half a million dollars since they began six years ago.

“It was an amazing experience,” said Nalissa Amar ’20. “After 12 hours of standing and dancing all night, the reveal had to be the best part. We raised more than $125,000. I’m so happy to have been a part of this, and giving back to the kids next door.”

At the end of the night, the children cut off the wristbands students received when they first entered. This symbolizes the moment a hospital patient experiences when they can cut off their own admittance wristbands when they are given a clean bill of health. Likely one of the most humbling parts of the whole event, it was a fitting way to end what had been another fundraising feat for Emmanuel. It also symbolized another step in the fight toward when “every child is well.”
