Op-Ed: A Message from Eric Cote on the New StrengthsQuest Program

First off, I would like to welcome everyone back to campus. As you arrive back, I am sure you will notice a few changes on campus, such as the progress on the new residence hall, and even a big display of furniture in the JYC, which could be used in that new building. One change however, which you may not be aware of, is the new StrengthsQuest program.  The program is offered to the entire campus.

I first completed this program in the spring of my sophomore year 2 years ago.  Assistant Director of Residence Life/Residence Director Alissa Lynch brought the initiative forward to this campus. This was the first StrengthsQuest class at Emmanuel College.  I somehow, by the stroke of luck, was nominated to take the class.

I was skeptical of what Gallup, founder of the StrengthsQuest program, could have developed in this test to make people more effective leaders. I came to find out that it helps you change your outlook on your own skills and weaknesses in order to better your ability to thrive in your own individualized environment.

The test is designed to single out your 5 top strengths through a series of timed questions that gauge skills. While too often we are focused on our weaknesses and fixing those weaknesses, we forget to optimize our strengths and capitalize on the amazing skills that each and every one of us already have.

This test, paired with the interactive course that will now be offered at Emmanuel to the entire student body, is something I encourage everyone to sign up for. This course helped me to improve in applying and interviewing for jobs and internships, working in dreaded group projects, and serving as a leader in the SGA. I feel more confident in my ability to succeed and grow after college because of this course. As an outgoing senior, that is a great feeling to have.

So, I ask you, especially sophomores, if you have not done so already, to sign up for this course using the link below to start your journey on perfecting your Strengths.

If you have any questions about the course, do not hesitate to reach out to me.

Welcome back and remember the lessons we’ve been taught.  College is a time to grow and set yourself up for success.  I believe that this course is the first step in doing that.
