“Notes to My Youth” A Poem by Jonathan Rowe ’18

With you i was a chrysalis, my cocoon ruptured & exposed

you tested my boundaries like a first drink in sobriety

you were the hit that gave me my first high

you were a train i steered without breaks

you made today the thing that’s in; tomorrow, so passé

you instructed my class on heartbreak, with infatuation as a pre-requisite

you made Nas’s The World is Yours a promise i could believe

at times i stare back, hoping our reckless play could start once more

but adulthood is possessive and won’t let you come near

so i turn around and bear what is left of you inside.
