Dead Island 2, the “upcoming” survival horror action RPG, has been postponed. Since its announcement, we’ve only heard vague promises.
Dead Island, released in 2011, was an unexpected hit for publisher Deep Silver, thanks to an excellent trailer that didn’t represent the game’s tone.
After five million copies sold, a sequel was announced in 2014, but we still don’t get it. A five-year-old playable gameplay sample was just posted online for fans to see what may have been (or still could be).
The next-generation consoles, Xbox Series X and PS5, might be enormous for the zombie game. So, what happened? Who knows?
Newest Information
On This Date in 2022:
Well, this is a bit of a surprise. New information from notorious leaker Tom Henderson suggests that Dead Island 2 is still going strong. Somewhat.
Henderson states that the game is in “a decent stage” and will be released “very soon,” so we recommend checking out the video below for the entire story.
This is supposedly ahead of a probable release window in the fourth quarter of 2022 or early in 2023.
A few story spoilers (which we won’t publish here) are mentioned by Henderson, and certainly gameplay has improved since the 2015 leaks, given that we’re already years past those first glances.
June 4th, 2021
Deep Silver has stated that there will be no E3 announcements during the 2021 E3 convention. The Publisher made the announcement on Twitter:
“As part of #SummerGamesFest, our parent firm @KochMedia HQ will make an announcement on June 11th.
You should know that Dead Island, Saints Row, Metro, and TimeSplitters will not be present (or at any other E3 2021 event). Let us know when we have something fresh to tell you.”
That’s all there is to it.
In 2020 – December 4th
Deep Silver has confirmed that the game is still in development.
“Give up, guy,” on Twitter user responded to another’s question about Dead Island’s release date.
“We wouldn’t be so confident about it!” responded Deep Silver.
It’ll be interesting to see how the game has evolved since the 2014 Games com demo and why it took so long.
What’s Dead Island 2 About?
Dead Island 2 is expected to be a continuation of the previous game, pitting players against swarms of zombies with up to three co-op friends, armed with any weapons they can find.
The initial plan for the sequel was to depict a confined California during the zombie apocalypse, a few months after the events of the first game.
Early development gameplay was showed off at Games com the same year it was announced, but nothing further has been seen since then.
When Is It Out?
We still don’t have a release date as of this writing.
To put it another way, production of the game has been fraught with controversy and missteps.
Although Spec Ops: The Line developer Eager was initially working on the game, it has subsequently shifted to Sumo Digital and then Dam buster Studios.
As a result of the initial success of Dead Island, work on a follow-up began almost immediately. THQ addressed the game’s future at a presentation, noting that it is still in production despite three developer changes.
This one isn’t worth the wait.
Platforms
At one point, the game was supposed to be released for PS4, Xbox One, and PC, most likely on Steam. Even though a Switch release appears improbable, we believe the game will arrive at PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series X, respectively, on next-generation consoles.
