Release Date
Grand Army has been available for streaming on Netflix since Oct. 16, 2020 – giving Netflix plenty of time to decide whether or not to produce a second season, even in COVID-19 times. However, the streaming giant has not done so as of yet, leaving fans to worry whether or not the show will be returning at all. On Twitter, some people are starting to get antsy. Some viewers have even threatened to cancel their Netflix subscriptions if a second season of the show, which follows the lives of five different kids at a major high school in Brooklyn, is not produced.
The nine episodes of Grand Army, which are based on the play Slut by Katie Cappiello — who also serves as the showrunner — have dealt with topics such as terrorism, politics, pranks, family concerns, cultural disputes, drug problems, sexual assault, and other current teen issues.
It’s already sparked some controversy, with three writers of colour quitting the show due to what Ming Pfeiffer described as “racial exploitation and abuse” on the set (in a tweet). Overall, despite the fact that the series definitely has its share of ardent fans, reactions to the show have been divided at best. IndieWire, for example, stated that the show is centred on its white protagonist and that it falls into clichés while attempting to be relevant to Generation Z to no avail. In addition, while Netflix has not disclosed the show’s viewership figures, it did rank in the top 10 most-watched shows on the streaming service in October 2020 – albeit in the last position (via Newsweek). All of this makes the likelihood of its comeback a possibility, but not a foregone conclusion.
Unfortunately, things do not appear to be going well. Deadline reports that Netflix has finally cancelled its hit comedy series. That doesn’t necessarily mean the end of the world in this day and age of platform-hopping, but it’s certainly not a good indication. If another platform steps up to the plate and orders a second dish of “Grand Army,” here’s where the series could end up in the future.
Can You Tell Me When the Second Season of Grand Army Will Be Released?
Due to the fact that Grand Army cannot begin production until it has received approval for a second season — and there is no way of knowing when that will occur, if it does — a release date has not been set. Even if Season 2 is greenlit today and all of the necessary procedures are put in place to get the performers back and get the production back on track, it is possible that the programme will not return for a long period of time.
A report from Cinemaholic states that the show was filmed between May and September of this year in Toronto and New York. It took an additional 13 months or so for it to be released on Netflix. The second time around, perhaps, it will not take as long, but you never know with these things. Because a new platform would be required to participate, the process will most likely take even longer. Fans should not expect to see the show until at least 2023, if not sooner.
Who Will Be a Part of the Grand Army Season 2 Ensemble Cast?
Because season 2 has not yet been confirmed, there is no official cast list available at this time. Despite this, all five primary members of the first season’s cast have stated a wish to return for a second season. “We’re ready,” Amalia Yoo said in a group interview with Entertainment Weekly on October 17 that appeared to speak for the entire cast and crew. However, at the time, they all had no idea whether or not the show would be returning, and they all hoped that Netflix was paying attention. Netflix is still in control of the situation.
Joey Del Marco, who is also the primary character in the source material Slut, is played by Odessa A’zion, who is also a member of the show’s cast.
Dominique Pierre is played by Odley Jean, who is a first-generation Haitian student. Swim team member Siddhartha Pakam, played by Amir Bageria, is a gay Indian student who is on the swim team. Maliq Johnson portrays Jayson Jackson, a musical prodigy from the Spanish Harlem neighbourhood of New York City. Amalia Yoo, who portrays Leila Kwan Miller, a Chinese adolescent adopted by Jewish parents, completes the core ensemble of characters.
Bacteria responded to a question about what the show meant to them in a brief Netflix interview that was shared on Twitter by saying, “It means being correctly, accurately represented” and also accepting “a great responsibility.” The action went on to say, “In the hopes that people will be able to forget that there is always someone suffering through anything, I wrote this poem. You are not alone in your feelings. In addition, don’t make other people’s problems seem less important than your own.”
As a result, it would be unusual if any of the actors turned down an offer to reprise their roles in the upcoming season of the show.
You may also anticipate seeing a lot of the supporting characters again, as their tales haven’t necessarily come to a close. Alphonso Romero II, Ashley Granger, Jaden Jordan, August Blanco Rosenstein, and Zac Kara are some of the actors who appear in this film as well.
What Is the Plot of Grand Army Season 2 Going to Be?
A number of topics remained unanswered at the conclusion of Season 1, including the repercussions of Joey’s sexual assault.
When Tim (Thelonious Serrell-Freed) finds out about George (Anthony Ippolito) and Luke (Brian Altimus), he may turn on them and denounce their crimes to the authorities. It’s also important for fans to learn more about Dom’s internship and relationship with John (Romero), Sid’s Harvard journey and relationship with Victor (Rosenstein) after being outed involuntarily, and whether Leila (Yoo), who sent an anonymous email threatening to bomb the school, will face any consequences if the information about her actions gets out to the public. In addition, a second season could explore the consequences of Jay’s silent protest during a performance in solidarity with his best buddy Owen and how it may influence his future.
Johnson has publicly speculated (via Digital Spy) on the possibility of the second season of Grand Army, stating that he enjoys the way the show displays friendships with greater subtlety in a way that is not frequently seen on television. Specifically, it’s about the bond Jay has with fellow saxophonist Owen in his character’s situation (Jordan). “This is just speculation and my opinion, but I believe he will only continue to develop as a young man,” Johnson said of the quarterback. We’ll probably see Owen again since Jayson isn’t going to let their relationship go down the drain, says the author.
In an ideal world, all of the characters in the Grand Army will experience the same level of development as they navigate the high school coming-of-age drama.
