Early Years
Gotti was born on February 14, 1964, in the Queens borough of New York City, to Italian-American parents John Gotti and Victoria DiGiorgio Gotti. Gotti grew up in Howard Beach, New York, with his four siblings. Because of his father’s significant participation with the Gambino crime family, he was exposed to the mob culture of New York City throughout his boyhood.
He attended the New York Military Academy before launching Samson Trucking Company with the aid of his father. After the trucking business failed, he went to work for the Carpenters Union.
Connections to the Gambino Crime Family
Despite his attempts to avoid working with his father in the mob, Gotti was eventually enrolled into the Gambino crime family in 1988, at the age of 24. In 1990, he was promoted to capo, or captain, putting him in a position of authority at a young age.
In 1992, his father was convicted of racketeering and sentenced to life in prison. While in prison, his father was adamant about keeping his job as the top boss until he died or retired. To do so, he told Gotti and his brother Peter, who was also a member of the criminal family, what he wanted.
Gotti became more discreet in his business dealings in order to avoid getting caught by FBI bugs, which had been his father’s downfall. He also tried to pass himself off as a legitimate businessman to avoid suspicion. However, many of the other New York mafia families, as well as some of his own men, did not approve of his tactics. He did not gain his father’s reputation for negotiating, and several significant families, such as the Genovese family, refused to engage with him at all. By 1995, a plot to assassinate Gotti had been discovered, indicating his lack of popularity in the city.
The FBI examined the basement of a property owned by Gotti in 1997 and discovered a lot of damning materials, including a list of his organization’s members, guns, and a huge sum of money. Lists of members of other New York criminal families were also discovered, which was particularly incriminating for Gotti since, while it was common for bosses to have lists of prospective members of other crime families, they were meant to be destroyed following their inductions. This revelation ruined Gotti’s image in New York, since it exposed other families to further federal scrutiny, and also outraged his father. In the aftermath of the incident, he was dubbed “Dumbfella” by the New York City media.
