IPHONE 14

The iPhone 14 series is set to debut in September 2022, and despite the fact that that date is still a long way off, information about the iPhone 13’s successors is already seeping widely.

However, current speculations point to a completely new design for the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max, as well as a brand new model named the iPhone 14 Max with considerable camera upgrades.

And as soon as we learn more about the iPhone 14, we’ll update this storey, so stay tuned. Leaks are already pouring in at an alarming rate, so keep an eye on this space.

News about the iPhone 14 as of March 21: Another rumour claims that there will be no iPhone 14 Mini, but that the forthcoming handsets will have displays that are slightly smaller than their iPhone 13 counterparts.

Mar. 16: According to leaked CAD renders, the twin cut-out camera design on the front of the Pro versions will be implemented, but the back may not.

Mar. 14: According to reports, Apple will only employ a new chipset in the top iPhone 14 versions, with last year’s being used in the rest.

Today, Apple had a launch event, and a new iPhone SE was unveiled.

A leaked schematic shows the pill and punch hole replacement for the notch on the Pro models on February 27.

Production appears to have begun on February 21st! According to a source, Apple has already started trial manufacturing of the iPhone 14 series.

The notch is no longer active as of January 13th. Cutouts are here to stay. According to a supply-chain specialist, Apple will include a circular and pill-shaped camera notch on the front display of the iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max devices. “The tiny hole will not be invisible,” says the author.

Keep your wallet safe on January 11th. According to speculations, the iPhone 14 will cost $799 in the United States, which is the same price as the iPhone 13. Furthermore, the Pro and Pro Max will become even more costly.

What You Need to Know About iPhone 14

The iPhone 14 will be released on September 14th. Although no release date has been announced, Apple typically always releases new iPhone models in September.

Pricing for the iPhone 14 is unknown, however, the iPhone 13 started at $799 / £779 / AU$1,349, and prices for the future versions may be similar.

Design: The iPhone 14 will most likely resemble the iPhone 13, with the exception that the iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max may include a punch-hole camera instead of a notch. Instead of an iPhone 14 small, an iPhone 14 Max with a larger screen may be released.

The iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Pro could have 6.1-inch (or 6.06-inch) OLED panels with 1170 x 2532 resolution, while the iPhone 14 Max and iPhone 14 Pro Max could have 6.7-inch (or 6.68-inch) 1284 x 2778 OLED screens. The Pro models will have a 120Hz refresh rate, while the others will have a 60Hz refresh rate.

The main cameras on the iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max could be 48 megapixels (up from 12MP on the current models). Other details are unknown, although a triple-lens camera is expected on all iPhone 14 models except the base model, which will have two rear lenses.

Specs: Every iPhone 14 model is likely to contain the strong A16 Bionic CPU, but the Pro models could have up to 2TB of storage and 8GB of RAM (up from the current maximum of 6GB) (up from a current maximum of 1TB).

Battery: While little is known about the battery at this time, there are rumours that its capacity may increase as the phones become fatter to accommodate larger batteries.

Release Date for the iPhone 14

There’s no word on when the iPhone 14 will be released, but we can make a good guess based on the fact that Apple releases new models around the same time every year, usually at a special event.

Price of the iPhone 14

We’ve heard a price leak for the iPhone 14 that revealed four members of the new lineup, including a Max but no Mini.

According to reports, the base phone will cost $799 – the iPhone 13 costs $799 / £779 / AU$1,349, so this fits – with the iPhone 14 Max costing $100 extra.

The iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max are expected to cost $1,099 and $1,199, respectively, which would be $100 more than their predecessors’ starting price.

DESIGN OF THE IPHONE 14
The most important information about the design of the iPhone 14 comes from a large leak, which includes unauthorised renders of the iPhone 14 Pro Max.

One of these is shown below, and it has a punch-hole camera rather than a notch, with the Face ID components probably hidden behind the screen. It also lacks a camera bump, with the lenses laying practically flat on the back – a feat that appears to be accomplished by making the phone thicker.

The back is semi-glossy glass, the volume buttons are circular, and the sides appear to be titanium rather than stainless steel, as in the iPhone 13 Pro Max. You can also see that a triple-lens camera and a Lightning port are still present.

The colours displayed above aren’t official (though the source claims to have seen a rose gold model), and it’s also worth noting that this design is only expected to apply to the Pro models, with the iPhone 14 (and, if there is one, the iPhone 14 Max) likely to retain the notch. It’s unclear which, if any, of the other design elements featured here will make it into the standard versions.

An unofficial render of the iPhone 14 Pro Max’s likely design.

Of course, we’d take this with a grain of salt, especially because it comes from Jon Prosser, who has a shady track record, and another source has claimed that the iPhone 14 Pro series will still have a notch (although a smaller one) – potentially along with a punch-hole.

However, Prosser is frequently correct, and both Mark Gurman and Ming-Chi Kuo (two renowned Apple leakers) have since stated that the notch will be replaced with a punch-hole camera, as has The Elec.

Another leaker has added their two cents, claiming that the camera cut-out would be pill-shaped, implying that it will be larger than ordinary punch-hole cameras.

According to Ross Young, a supply-chain expert in the field of smartphone displays, the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max will have a “hole + pill” design. A pill-shaped cutout will be present, as well as a smaller hole that will be visible — a claim backed up by a leaked schematic cutout.

More sources have since confirmed this and leaked CAD renders (seen below) also show this design, but they don’t exhibit the back camera adjustments shown higher up.

However, Gurman recently stated that the iPhone 14 will have “a hole-punch-sized notch,” and it’s unclear if he means a little notch or an actual punch-hole, so there’s still some confusion.

We’ve also heard that the Pro models’ frames may be made of titanium alloy. This would most certainly be more durable than the materials used in current models, and according to this source, an iPhone 14 Max will replace the iPhone 14 small.

Reputable leaker, IPHONE 14 DISPLAY According to Ming-Chi Kuo, there will be two 6.1-inch iPhone 14 versions (a normal and a Pro), as well as two 6.7-inch iPhone 14 models (a Pro Max and a Max).photo-5620067

Ross Young has also provided us with more specific screen specs (another leaker with a good track record). The iPhone 14 will feature a 6.06-inch 1170 x 2532 OLED screen with a 60Hz refresh rate and 460 pixels per inch, according to Young. The iPhone 14 Pro is expected to have comparable screen specifications, but with a variable refresh rate of 120Hz.

The iPhone 14 Pro Max is claimed to sport a 6.68-inch OLED screen with a resolution of 1284 x 2778 pixels, a refresh rate of 120Hz, and a pixel density of 458 pixels per inch. There will also be an iPhone 14 Max (which will replace the mini) with the same screen characteristics as the mini but a 60Hz refresh rate.

Another source claims that the two lower-cost versions will be limited to 60Hz displays, as is the case with the present lineup. However, we’ve now learned that Apple is investigating a 120Hz screen for the iPhone 14 Max, but has yet to make a decision.

According to a leak, all four iPhone 14 variants may sport 120Hz screens. This is an older leak that contradicts the one above, but this allegation was made again recently, so we’re not sure what’s going on.

A patent for a method that could make the iPhone screen tougher without making it thicker has also been filed. That would be a good feature, but patents seldom become reality, so don’t hold your breath.

Camera for iPhone 14

On the photography front, the iPhone 14 Pro Max appears to have a triple-lens camera in the unofficial renders above, and another source also claims that the phone (along with the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Max) will have a triple-lens camera. Meanwhile, the iPhone 14 is said to include two lenses.

That doesn’t sound like much of a departure from the iPhone 13 lineup, however, the lens and sensor characteristics may differ.

Indeed, Ming-Chi Kuo (an Apple analyst with a good track record) claims that the iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max will each have a 48MP main camera, up from the current models’ 12MP. This would presumably be capable of recording an 8K video, and he’s said it before, and he said it again in December 2021, so he appears to be certain about it.

Furthermore, another expert has backed up Kuo’s claim, claiming that both Pro models will have 48MP cameras in 2022. While this isn’t confirmation, it does support Kuo’s original assertion.

There are also reports that a periscope camera (for long-range optical zoom) is in the pipeline, and we’ve seen a patent to back up these claims. However, most sources indicate that this is still a ways off, with the iPhone 15 or later being the most likely candidate.

Specifications and Features of the iPhone 14

One thing is almost certain: the iPhone 14 will feature a new chipset, most likely dubbed the A16 or A16 Bionic. According to Ross Young, this would be manufactured on a 4nm process, implying that it would be a respectable upgrade over the iPhone 13’s 5nm A15 Bionic.

According to DigiTimes, the technology might possibly be scaled down to 3nm (via MacRumors).

However, we’ve lately heard that a 5nm process may be used again, as TSMC (the chipset’s manufacturer) is reportedly having trouble switching to a 3nm (or 4nm) technology.

We’ve also heard that this chipset may be limited to the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max, with the A15 Bionic remaining in the basic models. According to the same source, all models will have 6GB of RAM. Multiple sources have now noted the divide in chipsets.

According to another rumour, the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max would both have 8GB of RAM. So far, 6GB of RAM has been the most we’ve seen on an iPhone. Though we’ve heard that all models will come with 6GB of RAM, which would be an increase for the less expensive models but not for the Pro models.

On the storage front, the iPhone 13 Pro models upped the maximum amount of internal storage available from 512MB to 1TB, and we’re hearing that the iPhone 14 Pro phones could quadruple that – all the way to 2TB.

Beyond that, some sources believe we’ll see under-display Touch ID on the iPhone 14, though Mark Gurman (an Apple leaker with a good track record) has said that while Apple apparently tested it, the company is now all-in on Face ID, so it sounds like this won’t happen – and if it does, it’ll probably be alongside Face ID rather than instead.

Another source has stated that under-display Face ID would not be implemented, therefore this appears to be quite improbable.

A move from a Lightning port to USB-C is another rumoured but unlikely feature. Apple is purportedly contemplating this for the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max, but we’re suspicious because just one source has mentioned it.

The iPhone 14 will almost certainly contain 5G compatibility, and a patent reveals it may also include a new type of 3D Touch that uses haptic feedback to make interactions more intuitive. However, as with many patents, we don’t expect anything to come of this one.

Apple is also rumoured to be switching from a physical SIM card to an eSIM (which you won’t be able to remove). This is already available on the iPhone 13 series, but it’s in addition to, not instead of, a physical one. If Apple does go eSIM-only with any iPhone 14, it will almost certainly offer variants with both types.

Battery for iPhone 14

In terms of the battery, it appears that there will be improvements, with one source claiming that it would be larger in future generations and another claiming that the phones will be thicker – potentially allowing for a larger battery.

According to one patent, you’ll be using a MagSafe charger instead of the Lightning connector when it comes time to charge, while early unofficial models show the Lightning port intact.

We’d be astonished if Apple removed the Lightning port from the iPhone 14, but a new EU plan could spell the end for it.
