PEN15, a famous cringe comedy show on Hulu, debuted its first season in February of this year. Maya Erskine, Anna Konkle, and Sam Zvibleman created the show, which is set in the year 2000, and stars Erskine and Konkle in the starring roles as middle school versions of themselves. Erskine and Konkle portray the awkwardness and difficulties of middle school life with real young, middle school-aged actors, which adds to the overall humor and underlines the main protagonists’ feelings of being outsiders.
Since its first release a few years ago, PEN15 has amassed a sizable fan base as well as critical accolades (including some coveted Emmy nominations). Fans were eager for the next part of Maya and Anna’s everyday escapades after season 1 ended. The second season, though only the first half of the season, was released in September of 2020. Fans are curious about the details of a third season of the amusing comedy, even though the rest of season 2 has yet to be revealed. Here’s everything we know so far about the film, from the release date to the cast and plot.
When Will the Third Season of Pen15 Be Released?
First and foremost, the second season’s second half requires attention, as just half of it is now available on Hulu. Hulu has not yet set a release date, but Erksine and Konkle told Harper’s Bazaar that the episodes will be broadcast in 2021. The New York Times noted that while the second batch of episodes was supposed to be released six months after the first, the pandemic caused production to be suspended, making the wait much longer. The additional episodes, Konkle told the New York Times, will most likely be released a year after the interview (September of 2020).
Season 3 has even less information available due to the fact that season 2 has yet to conclude. After the first season aired in February of 2019, the show got renewed for a second season in early May of the same year. We may have to wait until the entirety of season two is released before hearing about the third season, based on that timeframe. If the rest of Season 2 is released in September, we will almost certainly learn more about a future season by the end of the year. Despite this, PEN15 has been hailed as one of the best TV shows of the year, with praise from both fans and reviewers – The Nation calls it “so wonderful it hurts,” while the LA Times calls it the “best new show” of the year. With a reputation like this, it’s highly likely that fans will get their hands on the much-anticipated third season.
Who Will Appear in the Third Season of Pen15?
Erskine and Konkle are the only cast members that can almost certainly be counted on to appear in season 3 — provided we get one. After all, they’re not just the show’s main characters, but also its creators and writers. Apart from Maya and Anna, both characters’ parents have seen a lot of screen time so far. Maya and her mother, Yuki (played by Erskine’s real-life mother, Mutsuko Erskine), had an up-and-down relationship, which many mothers and daughters can relate to.
Meanwhile, Anna’s parents’ rocky divorce is a key plotline; Anna’s parents, Kathy and Curtis, are played by Melora Walters and Taylor Nicholas, respectively. These performers are highly likely to return for a third season, especially if Mutsuko Erskin continues to give her daughter a “solid” by participating in the program, which she disclosed to Vulture is how she first got involved.
Many of the pair’s classmates, such as Maya’s “enemy” and eventual love interest, Sam Zablowski, have been consistent so far (Taj Cross). Heather (Anna Pniowsky) and Brandt are two other cast members who frequently appear as classmates (Jonah Beres). These three actors, as well as other well-known classmates, are expected to appear in the third season.
What Will Be the Focus of Season 3 of Pen15?
PEN15 has intelligently and successfully explored many themes that we can all remember struggling with as 13-year-olds. From unrequited crushes to popularity woes and friendship clashes, the series has covered a lot of middle school terrain thus far. With the characters still in 7th grade, there is bound to be a lot more to cover in the future. Both pals were in trouble at the end of Season 2’s first half. Gabe (Dylan Gage), Maya’s co-star in a school play, broke up with her, leaving her sad. Meanwhile, Anna, who has been coping with her parents’ divorce, must choose which of her parents she wants to live with after the divorce is finalized.
In an interview with Harper’s Bazaar, Erskine and Konkle discussed what to expect in the second half of Season 2, indicating that their characters will be exposed to new experiences. According to Konkle, “They’re having more firsts this time. In the first season, there were numerous firsts. This seven-episode block is the retaliation for all of the previous ones. ‘Who am I?’ it’s like. What exactly is this? Is it true that I’m a teenager? ‘Do I look like a kid?’ ‘All right, I’m an adolescent,’ says the next limb. Here are a few of my firsts. ‘Now I’m capable of dealing with anything.'”
Season 3 may depict the “blowbacks” of these events that are still to occur, with these fresh experiences lined up for the following round of episodes. Also, because the show’s plot will most likely wind up in 7th grade soon, the third season may carry the plot onto the next grade. Whatever PEN15 has in store for us, it will almost probably be as embarrassing, hilarious, and poignant as anything we’ve seen thus far.
When Will the Third Season of Pen15 Premiere?
The second season of Pen15 launched on the streaming service Hulu on September 18, 2020. It consists of only seven episodes, each lasting 27 to 29 minutes. the Third Season of Pen is premier on 10 November 2022 on Hulu.
“Jacuzzi,” the eighth episode of season two, will be an animated episode in which we will see Maya and Anna travel on a family vacation to Florida with the latter’s father. “On vacation with Curtis, Anna and Maya are confronted with new crushing insecurities,” according to a Hulu blurb. The females try to ignore them, but a mystical turn renders their insecurity unforgivable.”
After only two seasons, Hulu’s PEN15 is coming to an end. According to a Hulu spokesperson, Pen 15 Season 2, which aired its final batch of episodes on December 3, will now be the show’s final season.
Insiders told The Hollywood Reporter that Konkle and Erskine had been working on the show that became PEN15 for nearly a decade and was eager to take a vacation. Furthermore, they recently welcomed their first children: Konkle’s daughter, Essie Wunderle Anfanger, was born in early 2021, and Erskine’s son, Leon Frederick, was born in May.
Maya and Anna’s adventure isn’t over; according to other sources, Hulu is highly interested in doing more seasons of PEN15 if Erskine and Konkle ever return to the plot. For the time being, however, it’s better to put middle school’s adolescent sorrow behind you and return to adulthood’s typical discomfort.
On August 27, you may view the special animated episode, which was written by Konkle and will be available on Hulu.
Trailer for the Pen15 Animated Special:
Pen15 Animation Episode Recap: A new animated episode based on the same scenario is scheduled to be released by Pen15. The only thing that has changed is that the series may have created its best episode ever in its animated special Jacuzzi.
Surprisingly, Jacuzzi beats all of its predecessors. In this lighthearted holiday episode, Maya Erskine and Anna Konkle take a trip to Florida with Anna’s newly divorced father. They met some people, drank some booze, and got themselves into some mischief. Nothing significant happens in actuality, but everything appears significant through the lens through which it is viewed.
Pen15 is set 20 years ago, and the animation immediately reminds me of MTV’s Liquid Television from the 1990s.
The fact that the Jacuzzi is animated also helps to hide the show’s main concept: adult ladies interacting with children. It’s no longer necessary for Erskine and Konkle to dress and act younger, and there’s no longer a disturbing moment when they start chatting to 13-year-old boys. In animated form, Maya and Erskine are the same as everyone else. This episode would be a good place to start if the age gap between the actor and the role has been a turnoff for you.
Let’s Take a Look at Season 3 of Pen15.
By the end of 2021, you might be able to see it. The shooting had to be halted in several locations because of the COVID-19 epidemic, but now that the lockdown has been lifted from numerous locations, the Pen 15 season 3 shoot might start at any time, and the film could be released in 2022.
