Netflix describes “Gentefied” as a “wonderful love letter to the Latinx community” in its introduction, so its renewal and construction of a second season announced in May 2020 (via Deadline), has sparked even more excitement.
The bilingual dramatic comedy is based on a 2017 Sundance digital series and follows three adult Mexican-American cousins as they try to achieve the American dream, despite the fact that their efforts have an impact on their neighborhood, grandfather, and family’s taco shop in Boyle Heights, Los Angeles — and not always in a positive way.
The first season’s ten half-hours aired in February 2020. Identity, class, family ties, tradition, and the perils of today’s world, such as memes and Instagram stardom, have all been explored in these original episodes.
Cliffhangers abound near the end of the tenth episode, as cast member Carlos Santos described it in a piece for Refinery 29 “Then, at the very end, it reaches out and grips you. It comes up behind you, bites you, and then leaves you unconscious. But, you say, I need a second season to find out what happens!”
A second season will hopefully maintain the highly acclaimed show’s style of wit and compassion, as well as provide viewers with a personal look at difficult subjects that have become national concerns. Here’s all we know about Season 2 thus far.
What Is the Gentrified Release Date?
Season 2 of “Gentrified” has begun filming, according to a tweet from Netflix’s Con Todo account dated February 8, 2021. America Ferrera is directing again. Filming had been delayed owing to COVID-19 pandemic restrictions, as it had been for many other films, but everything appears to be back on pace today.
Given the present timeframe, the second season might arrive on Netflix as early as late 2021, but it’s more likely that it won’t arrive until the early following year. So, if you haven’t already, there’s still time to binge the first season.
Because there’ll be at least a year and a half between seasonal releases, you’ll have a solid excuse to watch it again and refresh your memory on what’s transpired thus far. Season 2 will consist of eight episodes or around four hours of fresh material.
What Is the Plot of Season 2 of Gentrified?
Pop (Joaquin Cosio) is caught up in the country’s political predicament at the end of the first season of “Gentrified.” He was arrested by the police six months ago on a vandalism charge (he urinated on a sign for new development) and was last seen in a Homeland Security van on his way to being deported.
That is the most significant loose end, but there are others. Yessika (Julissa Calderon) and Ana (Karrie Martin) are still separated. Erik (Joseph Julian Soria) and Lidia (Annie Gonzalez) have a plan for their future with their small daughter, but how would Pop’s disappearance influence it?
And Chris (Carlos Santos) was all set to improve Mama Fina’s for the neighborhood’s gentrifying population, but now he can’t find a job. Mama Fina’s, a former family restaurant, has been sold and will become a themed food pop-up experience. Talk about suspense.
However, if the show’s creators/writers are to be believed, audiences will be in for a treat.
In a tweet from August of last year, Linda Yvette Chávez remarked, “Season 2 is fantastic. We both sobbed while working on it.” Her excitement is evident in the quantity of “O”s in her tweet.

Who Is in the Gentefied Season 2 Cast?
In the second season, the majority of the present cast of “Gentrified” should return. Ferrera will continue to direct and produce the film, as previously stated. All of the younger Morales, including Soria as Erik, Martin as gay artist Ana, and Santos as Chris the ambitious chef, have stories that are in jeopardy, therefore they must continue on.
Nobody knows how much we’ll see of Cosio as Pop, the glue that holds the family together, but he’ll most likely return.
Significant others Lidia (Gonzalez) and Yessica are also in the cast (Calderon). Vivian, the woman who buys Mama Fina’s, is played by Alana Ubach, therefore she’ll most likely appear.
Beatriz will be played by Laura Patalano, Crazy Dave will be played by Felipe Esparza, and Pancho Solis will be played by Rafael Sigler. However, no new cast members have been announced as of yet.
Why Was Canceled by Netflix?
The show’s second season premiered on November 10, 2021. Despite many favorable reviews and a 96 percent certified fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes, Gentefied never cracked the Netflix Top 10 list in terms of viewing, which likely led to Netflix’s decision to discontinue the series.
In Gentefied, who is Chris’ Father?
10 Ernesto. Ernesto (Manuel Uriza) was only mentioned once in season one, but he became a key character in season two. Ernesto has a strained relationship with his family as Pop’s (Joaquin Coso) estranged son and Chris’s (Carlos Santos) distant father.
