Early Life

Wanda Sykes was born Wanda Yvette Sykes in Portsmouth, Virginia, on March 7, 1964. Her mother, Marion, was a banker, and her father, Harry, was a Pentagon-employed US Army colonel. Wanda’s family moved to Maryland while she was in third grade, and after graduating from Arundel High School, she enrolled at Hampton University in Virginia.

Sykes was a member of the Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority and earned a bachelor’s degree in marketing. Her first employment after graduation was a five-year stint as a contracting specialist with the National Security Agency.

Wanda began doing stand-up comedy around Washington, DC while working at the NSA, beginning with the Coors Light Super Talent Showcase in 1987. She left the NSA in 1992 and relocated to New York City, where she starred in the television show “An Evening at the Improv” the same year.

Wanda worked as Chris Rock’s opening act at Caroline’s Comedy Club a few years after relocating to NYC, and he offered her a writing gig on “The Chris Rock Show.” She also appeared on the show, and she began writing for “The Keenen Ivory Wayans Show” the following year.
