With Sean Pertwee portraying a middle-aged Alfred Pennyworth, Batman’s faithful friend and butler, in 2014’s “Gotham,” it appears that the 2010s sparked a yearning among audiences to see a young Alfred Pennyworth, Batman’s loyal friend and butler.
But it wasn’t until the Epix TV series “Pennyworth” in 2019 that DC fans got to glimpse a truly youthful version of the well-known DC Comics character.
In an alternate world of London, the series follows Alfred Pennyworth (Jack Bannon) as a young man in the 1950s and 1960s.
The former SAS soldier suffers from severe PTSD as a result of the war’s carnage, and in order to resume his normal life, he establishes his own personal security firm.
While it begins well, Pennyworth is quickly lured into a plot centered on the Raven Society, a group whose goal is to topple the British government and build their own fascist state.
When they come for Pennyworth and his fiancée, Esme (Emma Corrin), he fights back, finding allies in No Name League members Thomas Wayne (Ben Aldridge) and Martha Kane (Emma Paetz).
“Pennyworth” is a slick, action-packed spy thriller that appeals to both casual viewers and die-hard DC fans. After a production delay due to the pandemic, the show was renewed for a second season, which premiered on Epix on December 13, 2020.
Fans of the show are now looking forward to fresh episodes to see what Pennyworth and his friends are up to next.
Release Date: Is There a 3rd Season of Pennyworth?
The Season 2 finale of “Pennyworth” aired on April 11, 2021, but viewers had to wait nearly six months for any official word on the show’s future. Thankfully, during the 2021 DC FanDome event, it was announced that “Pennyworth” had been renewed for a third season.
“Pennyworth” was speculated to be moving from Epix to HBO Max (via Deadline) if it was renewed in the weeks leading up to its actual renewal. Those rumors were confirmed in October 2021, when it was revealed that “Pennyworth” had not only been renewed for Season 3 but would also be broadcast on HBO Max in the coming season.
Season 3 of “Pennyworth” has yet to be given a precise release date.
Season 3 of “Pennyworth” will premiere in 2022, according to a statement made during the show’s 2021 DC FanDome panel. With that in mind, viewers could expect a formal announcement about the show’s premiere date on 18 August 2022 sometime in the next months.
Until then, fans of “Pennyworth” may go back and revisit the first two seasons of the show, which are now available to stream on HBO Max.
Who Is in the Third Season of Pennyworth’s Cast?
Hainsley Lloyd Bennett and Ryan Fletcher, who play Bazza and Dave Boy, Pennyworth’s two loyal best friends from the army, as well as Dorothy Atkinson and Ian Puleston-Daves, who play Pennyworth’s mother and father, have been on the show since Season 1 alongside Jack Bannon, Ben Aldridge, and Emma Paetz.
Jason Fleming as the wicked Lord James Harwood, Paloma Faith as the manipulative psychopath Bet Sykes, and Polly Walker as Bet’s sister, Peggy, round out the cast.
Season 2 of “Pennyworth” saw the introduction of a few new characters and the promotion of two series regulars from Season 1. Ramon Tikaram, who portrays the tenacious Detective Inspector Aziz, and Harriet Slater, who portrays Sandra Onslow, were both promoted to series regulars for Season 2 of “Pennyworth.
” Edward Hogg made his debut as Colonel John Salt, a high-ranking Raven Union member, while Jessye Romeo made her debut as Katie Browning, an art student who becomes entangled with the Raven Union. Captain Gulliver Troy, Pennyworth’s former SAS captain, is also played by James Purefoy (Deadline).
There have been no formal cast announcements for Season 3 of “Pennyworth.” However, it was revealed during the show’s 2021 DC FanDome panel (via YouTube) that “Pennyworth” Season 3 will center on the lives of Bannon’s Alfred, Aldridge’s Thomas, Paetz’s Martha, Faith’s Bet Skyes, and Simon Manyonda’s Lucius Fox, as well as “all the other ‘Pennyworth’ characters.” Given this, it’s safe to assume that most, if not all, of the show’s primary cast members, will return in the new season.
In Season 3, What Will Happen to Pennyworth and His Pals?
The heartbreaking loss of Alfred’s close buddy Bazza in Season 2 of “Pennyworth” forces him and Daveboy to make a pledge to go to America together.
Aziz is also elected Prime Minister, and the Raven Union begins producing Stormcloud, a deadly chemical that they aim to deploy as a weapon. Lucius Fox, a well-known character from DC’s “Batman” comics, is also introduced in this season.
Finally, the season comes to a close with a series of unexpected twists and turns.
First, Martha Kane and Thomas Wayne fall in love, and Detective Inspector Aziz marries them.
Lord Harwood falls prey to the Raven Union’s other deceitful, power-hungry members, while Pennyworth, Daveboy, and numerous other show characters succeed in stopping the Raven Union’s destructive agenda. Martha gives birth to a baby girl, which goes completely against all previous “Batman” canon.
While little is known about the plot of “Pennyworth” Season 3, it was stated during the DC FanDome in 2021 that the third season will begin five years after the events of the second.
The upcoming season will also “delve deeper” into the lives of several of the show’s characters, including Martha, Thomas, Alfred, Bet Sykes, and Lucius Fox, and will reportedly reveal more about “their influence in the formation of the ‘Batman’ canon.
