Plot

During the first scene, Sophie Wynsfield is roused from her sleep by her mother, Helena (Rosie Fellner), who is wailing, apparently because she has slain her husband. Helena (Olga Kurylenko) is examined by Kate Fuller (Olga Kurylenko), a criminal psychologist, who is summoned by Detective McCarthy to decide if she should be committed to a mental institution.

Olga Kurylenko portrays Kate Fuller in this film. In the course of their interviews with Mr. Wynsfield, Helena and Sophie discover that they both believe Mr. Wynsfield was slain by the sleep demon Mara. As a result of Kate’s signing, Helena has been sentenced to prison.

Kate wakes up the next morning with sleep paralysis and observes a stranger walking around her apartment complex. A man named Takahashi has asked her to fly to Tokyo the next day to meet with him.

Rather than this, she uncovers his decomposing corpse, which was killed in the same manner as Mr. Wynsfield and is buried in the same place. McCarthy rejects the mythology of Mara as a fabrication. A visit to Helena in the psychiatric facility leads to her learning about Dougie from a Sleep Paralysis support group.

She begs Kate not to allow her to see her daughter again, claiming she will die at the hands of Mara; as proof, she displays a red mark in her left eye, explaining that Mara marks the victims she kills.

The Sleep Paralysis support group, which is conducted by Dr. Ellis, is where Kate meets Dougie, who is convinced that Mara is real and that she will kill Saul if he doesn’t get his way. Dougie and Kate become fast friends.

As he removes his sunglasses, he displays Saul’s entirely crimson eyes, which are now completely visible. In the middle of the night, Saul commits suicide by setting himself on fire; about the same time, Kate awakens from sleep paralysis and sees a figure for the second time in her dreams. McCarthy accuses Dougie of being Saul’s assassin, and he is brought in for questioning. They release him since there is no evidence to convict him.
