Do you feel like you’re coping well with all of this? Where have you been all this time?
Billy, my 20-year-old son, is with me at our Palisades home. We’ve had a very spiritual moment. I consider myself quite fortunate. Depending on who you ask, this could be a time for inspiration for some and a time for laziness for others. Concerns concerning my parents are on my mind.” In the meantime, however, I’m focusing on writing every day.
Then You’re One of Them.
That’s what I’m saying. You never know what will happen tonight. When it comes time for quarantine cleaning, my house is a complete mess because of my hoarding tendencies. The photo of Cruise, [cinematographer] John Toll, me, and the gaffers in Times Square, shortly after we shot the sequence, popped up as I was rummaging through these boxes last night. ‘Why did this come out of the box, tonight?'” he thought. Before I get into the specifics of this scene?”
Vanilla Sky has always been a favorite of mine. When I first saw it in high school, I was inconsolable at the end of it.
At the time, it wasn’t understood by everyone. A Fatal Attraction-style narrative was probably what they were expecting. This is not the movie you think it is. This is not the opening weekend, I went to watch it. Refunds should be requested immediately by anyone who needs one. It occurred to me, “How do you know what movie they’re referring to?” It was a nightmare.

I Didn’t Realize This Person Was Employed by the Theatre!
He was a member of the technical crew at the theatre! A member of the executive team, not an usher. You could turn this into a bonus, you know.” I thought to myself. You could turn it into a fantastic task for an equally fantastic group of students. That’s not the case.
As far as I know, there was no problem. Is the movie’s marketing strategy flawed?
Yeah. Although it was a difficult film to promote, it was so appealing to market the movie as an all-star love triangle between Cameron Diaz, Penélope Cruz, and Tom Cruise.
That person was wandering the aisles since there was nothing else that could match the intrigue generated by the notion. A romantic-triangle thriller was what everyone was looking forward to, and that’s exactly what they got.
What Do You Believe They Didn’t Anticipate?
The events that occurred after Tom and Julianna got into the automobile were like nails on a chalkboard to some. That particular scene has very little of Tom in it. “Don’t worry with me, remain on Diaz,” he said, ” One take for me, please.
” And so we did, in fact. Her hands are waving around in the automobile, and she’s trying to discover the corners of the scenario she’s in. It’s like we’re seeing a bolt of lightning strike a bottle. That scene, however, marks the beginning of the film’s ability to shock, disappoint, or even fascinate viewers with its human behavior.
I believe the film has found an audience over time. That’s happened to me a few times now. Fast Times at Ridgemont High is another example of a film that was largely ignored in the theatres but became popular later on.
I’m quite proud of Vanilla Sky.
It’s very uncommon for the album or person that first enraged you to end up being your closest companion. “I truly didn’t enjoy that movie,” people still tell me about Vanilla Sky. “I watch it every year,” I add.
Did You Clear It Out as the First and Last Show to Do So?
Yes. I’d heard from other people that the filming office had said, “I’m not sure.” Throughout the course of the event, they insisted that this would never happen again.
And it’s something I really regret.
The Person Who Made the Request Has Not Been Identified.
DeVito, Danny. I’m not sure what movie it was for, but it was a few months after we had finished filming. Danny, I’m so sorry about that.
Is There Any Particular Reason Why They Agreed to Let You Marry Them?
For the simple reason that Tom seems to be the most responsible of the bunch. As if to say, “Guys, we’re going to get this done for you, and it’s going to be great.” He looked them in the eye. We’d been shooting a lot in New York and bringing in a lot of business, but I took it up with Tom Cruise about putting it on the table.
He has a lot of charm and is a good leader. He’s a good salesman.

Do You Think They Would Have Said No if He Hadn’t Done It Himself?
Do you have any more footage of New York City in the middle of the night that you could share? Were those a lot less difficult to pull off than the others?
From The Dakota to Times Square, he drove for just over an hour. Traffic had to be halted for just a few seconds. Because we didn’t want Tom’s disfigured face to be on display and because there was a lot of paparazzi snapping pictures, it was a bit of a covert operation. As a result, the filming of Vanilla Sky was complicated by the fact that we had to conceal him.
It’s a Beautiful Face.
The disfigured face, on the other hand, was a hoot! When they say, “Your face-replacement shield,” and he responds, “You mean a fucking mask?” you know what I mean. This project was filled with sarcasm while we were working on it.
The idea of donning a mask to a club, as Tom does in the film, was also a little foreshadowing.
Yeah. Quite the opposite of what I’m used to. Astonishingly odd. In the film, the magazine is called Rise, and Katie Holmes appears on the cover. We have no idea who Katie Holmes was. Strangely foretelling, to say the least.
When I was working on Vanilla Sky, I wanted it to feel like Sergeant Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band, complete with varied textures and rabbit holes to explore. Penélope Cruz had a lot of fun teaching herself backward to say “This is a revolution of the mind” backward so we could video it and run it the other way around.
If She Says That in the Movie, When Exactly Does She Say It?
When David is suffocating Cameron Diaz, I believe this is one of the side effects. Currently playing is Todd Rundgren’s “Can We Still Be Friends?”
There’s still a lot of talk about the Vanilla Sky Easter eggs on the internet. Do you think someone has missed anything?
There are some things that people haven’t noticed. But they’ve picked up on a lot of things. There are a lot of moving parts to figure out when David Aames’ life changes and the purchased reality or “dream” begins.
Is There Anything You’d Like to Say?
It’s a positive development. In the scene where Cruise has his freakout and has returned from the murder of [Sofia/Julianna] and he’s coming down those winding stairs to Todd Rundgren, there are bits of studio chatter of Brian Wilson freaking out while he’s trying to make “Heroes and Villains,” mixed in with what was then the only unreleased Nirvana song, “You Know You’re Right.
” I don’t believe this has ever been released before. Courtney Love donated it to me even though we couldn’t give credit for it in the film because it was unlawful. This is the sole unreleased Nirvana song, she explained. “Find a place for it in your film.”
To Whom Did She Entrust Such a Sensitive Matter? Is This a Friendship?
Yes, our friendship hasn’t waned. Early on, she’s mentioned. “Graydon Carter called. Courtney Love called,” his aide says to David as he enters the office. As a result, you’ll find a lot of things like that tucked away in the corners and hardly audible.
After we finished Vanilla Sky, I was inspired to write something with Penélope Cruz in mind, so I visited her on the set of her new film, Masked, and Anonymous, with Bob Dylan. Even though I had previously interviewed him, someone introduced me to him. I was apprehensive, but he had a huge grin on his face.
He asked, “You worked on Vanilla Sky, right?” Having his music and the cover of The Freewheelin’ Bob Dylan expertly replicated in my film with Tom and Penélope, I said, “Yeah, I did.” It occurred to him that he’d seen your film at Times Square; he’d been there previously. There it was: “It’s me!” “I have been there before.
” It occurred to me, “Okay, I can check the box of Vanilla Sky right now. ” Bob Dylan realized who he was after taking the Vanilla Sky ride. That was, in a sense, the goal. That everyone would get a kick out of it.
The film’s concept of constructing a virtual environment to dwell in also feels prescient.
For better or worse, it feels like we’re on the verge of being able to achieve some of those things. It’s only a half-step away from what happens in the movie to have everyone living in their own virtual reality. It’s a little strange. It’s fascinating to see how the film’s message spreads.

Aames Chooses to Plunge From the Skyscraper to Leave the Illusion
Ironically enough, the fact that Aames must leap off the side of the building to wake up from his lucid dream is his idea before being put into stasis, partly because he is scared of heights. In this fashion, he wants to make absolutely sure he is ready and eager to wake up from his dreaming reality to the difficult, yet real, an existence he has outside of it.
By confronting a potent personal phobia, Aames must demonstrate that he has evolved and is capable of dealing with adversity in all forms. He eventually chooses to leave the dream by leaping, but beforehand, he is greeted by Sofia, who suggests they may meet again when they are both cats, which is a reference to an earlier part of the film.
The movie’s last scene is a shot of Aames waking up and being welcomed to a new world by someone saying “open your eyes,” which also happens to be the exact statement the movie began with. While both the audience and Aames are hearing this line a second time, it’s a completely new encounter involving an altered protagonist.
Different People Have Put Their Own Spin on the Finale.
In light of the film’s overall surreal character, it is only natural for the film’s themes and general nature to be interpreted in a variety of ways by different people, even decades afterward. According to Sergio Lopez, who reviewed the film for Video Librarian, it is “appropriate for a modern society where human connection is mediated through a screen, but darker feelings of unease are both ubiquitous and often unnamed” that fear, dread, and paranoia are the film’s true emotional register.
“Vanilla Sky’s” director has admitted to Vulture that the film’s ending can be interpreted in a variety of ways. These interpretations include the idea that Tech Support is telling the truth and that 150 years have passed, that everything in this film is a dream or a complication, or that all of this is a drug-induced fever dream brought on by the facial reconstruction of Jason Lee’s character in the movie.
After that, the filmmaker added, “When I see it, I get a completely new impression of the plot, the splicing, and the overall meaning every time. Over time, Jason Lee’s Brian Shelby has become to me the keyhole figure, allowing you to see things from a different angle.
In the Rubik’s Cube of Vanilla Sky, Jason Lee takes me to the best locations.” Vanilla Sky” continues to elicit strong feelings and thoughts about the nature of existence, as well as questions about what is real.
