Set in America, London, Canada, and Scotland. The book’s cover artwork reflects the internal shape of the novel: a caltrop. That’s an archaic military weapon that looks like a child’s jack with sharp spikes; the Romans used them to dissuade elephants, and the Highway Patrol still employs them to stop fleeing perps in cars. This book has four principal plot lines: Jamie and Claire; Roger and Brianna (and family); Lord John and William; and Young Ian, all intertwining in the nexus of the American Revolution—and all of them with sharp points. It’s a shame, but out of my hands.

At the Television Critics’ Association press tour in January 2019, executive producer Maril Davis spoke about future plans for the series.

“We’ll keep creating this until Claire and Jamie are a hundred,” Davis stated. “To be totally honest, we intend to do so. There’s still many more novels to go. As for us, we’re willing to continue if Starz and Sony agree, and if the actors agree, we’ll go ahead and finish the season.”

Starz CEO Jeffrey Hirsch also hinted at the possibilities of a spinoff. “We think there’s a lot of opportunity in the ‘Outlander’ universe to have tale extensions or spinoffs or sequels. We continue to look at that with our friends at Sony,” he said.In the past, fans have pushed for a spinoff series that specifically follows Lord John Grey, and employs Diana Gabaldon’s novellas on the character.

But when specifically questioned about a possible Lord John TV show, Hirsch was purposefully evasive.
