What’s the Deal With “the Unbearable Weight of Huge Talent”?
It appears that The Massive Weight of Unbearable Talent will address the existential agony of a prolific performer like Cage through a darkly humorous, ball-to-the-wall action picture based on the trailers and marketing materials alone Though it’s nothing new to see artists who have fallen on hard times confront their own legacy, the fact that Nicolas Cage plays himself is what makes this film so fascinating.

Nicolas Cage’s Opinion on the Unbearable Burden of Huge Talent
Even more shocking, Cage himself is unlikely to view the film until much later. Asked by Vinnie Mancuso of Collider in September 2021 how he approached the part, Cage replied:
“That’s a wonderful question, and I’m still trying to figure it out. That movie will never be on my watch list, is one of my apologies. I’ve heard nice things about it. One of the people that looked at it was Mike Nilon, my manager and co-producer on the album.
He was jubilant at this. I’ve been told that the audience was enthralled by the film. But I just can’t bring myself to watch myself play Tom Gormican’s highly-neurotic, anxiety-ridden version of myself in a movie theatre. This is where I ended up due to his constant prodding.
‘Tom, that’s not who I am,’ I said. I’m a person who thrives on solitude, contemplation, and introspection. In reality, I’m not always this ‘high-strung, anxiety-ridden guy.’ “However, neurotic Cage is the finest,” he replied. My response was ‘okay fine,’ and I agreed. Come on, guy. Whatever you want, I’ll do it.’ I won’t be able to watch it. However, I do hope you enjoy it.
Cage is unlikely to be recognized for his outstanding performance in The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent, even if it is his best work to date. Still, it’s nice to know that no matter what movie he’s in, Cage will always bring his A-game to the role.
A few years later, in an interview with Gentleman’s Quarterly (GQ) published in March 2022, he justified his decision to only release films on DVD:
The only way I could give it my all was when I was doing four movies a year, back-to-back. All of them fell flat. Some of them, such as ‘Mandy,’ were excellent, but others just didn’t work. But I didn’t call it in at all. Hence, any misunderstandings stemmed from that. That I didn’t give a second thought to what I was doing. I was trying to help.
