Stephen Tyrone Colbert was born on May 13, 1964, in Washington, DC. He is the youngest of eleven siblings. He grew up in Bethesda, Maryland, but later moved to James Island, South Carolina, with his family. On September 11, 1974, his father, James William Colbert Jr.
, and his two brothers, Peter and Paul, died in the Eastern Air Lines Flight 212 tragedy. His mother moved the family to Charleston, South Carolina, after the crash.
Colbert attended Charleston’s Episcopal Porter-Gaud School, where he performed in several school plays. He planned to study marine biology at first, but he damaged his inner ear during surgery to treat a perforated eardrum. As a result, he lost hearing in his right ear and was unable to pursue a scuba diving profession.
In 1982, he enrolled at Virginia’s Hampden-Sydney College, majoring in philosophy and continuing to appear in plays. Colbert transferred to Northwestern University in 1984 as a theatre major, and he graduated in 1986 with a degree in performance.

He began doing improvisation while at Northwestern, both on campus as part of the No Fun Mud Piranhas team and at the Annoyance Theatre in Chicago. Evelyn “Evie” McGee-Colbert has been Colbert’s wife since 1993. Their three children, Madeleine (born 1995), Peter (born 1998), and John (born 2000), were born in the year 2002. The family lives in Morristown, New Jersey. He is a devout Roman Catholic and a Democrat. He is also an ordained minister of the Universal Life Church Monastery.
