Kubo-san wa Mobu o Yurusanai is a Japanese manga series that was written and drawn by Nene Yukimori, who also did the art.
It has been serialized in Shueisha’s Weekly Young Jump since October 2019. As of November 2021, there will be seven tankbon volumes with all of the stories together. It has been getting a lot of attention recently, and it will soon be on Netflix.
About Volume 1
As a first-year high school student, Junta Shiraishi looks like a member of the mob even though he’s right next to you. That’s not the case with his classmate, “heroine-level beauty” Kubo, though. She always pays attention to him and is there to make fun of him.
Everyone can become important to someone, but it might be too soon to call these feelings “love.” I think this story is still a long way from being about two people who fall in love. Let’s call it “sweet” comedy, where a character who was in the background comes to the surface.
A review of the first volume
An interesting idea, but a little weird. So, Yukimori asks what it’s like to be part of the “mob” in a typical high school slice of life show. More specifically, the series is about Junta Shiraishi, who is almost unnoticeable to most of the people around him. People haven’t even noticed that he’s there.
That’s at least how it looks at first. The only person, at least at first, who doesn’t have this weird trait is the girl who is sitting right next to him.
Learns about this unusual situation and starts playing around with it to see how much attention she has to draw to him in order for him to notice.
As you can see, this isn’t a very realistic situation. It’s a lot of hyperbole. There are a lot of people who have felt like they are just a “background character” in a lot of other people’s stories. This isn’t the only time Kubo touches on familiar feelings, even though the story isn’t true. Yukimori, on the other hand, does a great job of using her setting and characters to show how awkward high school was back then.
This makes for a very real relationship between two characters who are still trying to figure things out.
It also shows young readers that even the most well-dressed people they know don’t know what they’re doing. You can tell whether it’s a story that you can relate to now or when you think about it in the past. It makes you feel good, even if it sometimes makes other people feel bad.
That doesn’t mean they are very complicated. Junta and Nagisa aren’t very interesting or complex people. But they don’t have to be either.
