On December 12, 2014, Netflix released the first episode of the show. John Fusco created the series, which stars Lorenzo Richelmy as Kublai Khan and Benedict Wong as Lorenzo Richelmy. The Weinstein Company was in charge of the production. Marco Polo was renewed by Netflix for a 10-episode second season on January 7, 2015, and premiered on July 1, 2016.
Netflix announced on December 12, 2016, that Marco Polo had been canceled after two seasons. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Netflix lost $200 million over the two seasons, and the decision to cancel was made jointly by Netflix and The Weinstein Company.
