For the purpose of promoting the orderly growth of standardization, marking, and quality certification of goods and for other purposes related thereto, the BIS was founded in 2016 as the National Standard Body of India by the BIS Act 2016.

Through standardization, certification, and testing, BIS has helped the national economy in many concrete ways, such as by ensuring the availability of safe, reliable, high-quality goods; reducing the risk of harm to consumers; increasing the volume of exports and imports; and limiting the spread of new varieties.

Keeping in view, the interest of consumers as well as the industry, BIS is involved in various activities as given below:

The BIS’s five regional offices are located in Kolkata (in the east), Chennai (in the south), Mumbai (in the west), Chandigarh (in the north), and Delhi (in the center) (Central). Branch Offices (BOs) are subordinate to Regional Offices and provide certification services to businesses and the general public.

What is the Full form of BIS?

The full form of BIS is the Bureau of Indian Standards. BIS is India’s national standards body operating underneath the aegis of the Indian government’s Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Nutrition and Public Distribution. It is set up by the 1986 Bureau of Indian Standards Act, that came into force on 23 December 1986. The minister responsible for the BIS ‘s administrative oversight of the department or agency is the ex-officio president of the BIS.

  • One of the main functions of BIS is to develop, identify, and encourage Indian Norms.
  • As of 1 January 2019, BIS has produced over 20,000 principles, which are in effect.
  • These cover major financial segments that assist the firms to grow the product quality and service providers.
  • BIS listed 15 industries that are significant to the sector of India. It has a separate Division Council for the development of Indian Standard to monitor and supervise the activities.
  • The criteria are periodically reviewed and developed to ensure conformity with the global standards in line with technological progress.
