Some Sports That You Didn’t Know Existed

Date:

Sports are a major part of our daily lives nowadays. One, or the other tournaments keep on taking place somewhere around the world: be it football, cricket or basketball. There are a large number of fans of these games who passionately follow the games. Some do it because they play or used to play the game, and some do it for the thrill. Some people even take interest in these sporting events from a betting perspective, about which you can Read More here.

But apart from all such popular games, we also have some lesser-known games across the globe. Some of these sports are very unique and even have their tournaments. Let us take a detailed look at some of them. Maybe next time, you tune into one of these unique tournaments and experience something new.

Wife Carrying

Yes, as the name suggests, this is a sport where male teammates have to carry their female teammates through an obstacle course. The team which finishes the race in the shortest time wins the event. The sport originated in Finland and has since been played in other countries e Australia, India, the United States, and Hong Kong, among others.

Underwater Hockey

Underwater Hockey is exactly that: hockey played underwater. Two teams compete to get the puck through the goal of the other team. The catch is that players don’t get underwater gear; they have to play the game whilst holding their breath. Each team consists of 6 members, and the game is divided into two halves of 10 to 15 minutes and a break of 3 minutes in between.

Quidditch

Yes, Quidditch doesn’t only exist in the Harry Potter universe. The popularity of the game among the fans led it to be adopted in the real world in 2005. The rules are pretty much the same: 2 teams of 7 members each, whose goal is to get the Snitch. A slightly deflated volleyball is used for the quaffle, and members score when they get it through any of the three hoops located on the field. What distinguishes Quidditch from other games is that it is one of the few co-ed team sports.

Kabaddi

Kabaddi is a sport popular in the Indian subcontinent. Two teams of 7 members each compete against each other. A raider goes into the court of the opposite team and tries to touch out as many defenders of the team as possible, in a single breath. If the raider succeeds in coming back to their half of the court without being tackled by the members of the other team, his/her team gets as many points as the number of players the raider touched out.

Zorbing

Zorbing consists of an inflated orb made of transparent plastic, referred to as zorbs. Players go inside the orb and race down a hill (or a plane surface). Some variations of the game also take place in water bodies, because the zorbs are floatable. The game is considered to be an adventure sport and is popular in many countries as a form of recreational activity.
