For years, I’ve been exploring the best Pokemon ROM Hacks, and they all surprise me with something I hadn’t seen before.

That’s owing to the immensely brilliant Pokemon community who spend months, if not years constructing these ROM hacks in order to help gamers get through those hard moments.

These Pokemon ROM hacks are some of the greatest on the internet. Here you’ll find a list of our favourites. Some have seen minor adjustments, while others feel like entirely new games.

Do not worry if you are unfamiliar with Pokemon ROM hacks or the top Pokemon emulators.

All you need is to download the ROMs using the links under each section and then use the relevant emulator on your phone, PC/Mac, or even on the top vintage handhelds in order to play them.

We get a modest profit off of sales of fan-made carts with ROM hacks installed that may be purchased through the featured links we provide on eBay. You may also find the files to these ROM hacks online for free.

1. Pokemon GS Chronicles

Pokemon GS Chronicles has been earning a lot of accolades throughout 2021, and that’s very simple because it’s one of the best Pokemon ROM hacks out there.

It’s based on the old classic Pokemon Gold and Silver games, which as you know was one of the best Gameboy Color games ever. But now, it has been altered, adjusted and enhanced into a totally new game that sticks to the storyline, but with even more depth.

Some of the new features that have been introduced to Pokemon GS Chronicles are Mega Evolutions, added Gen 4 -6 Pokemon, a map based of HGSS, new locales, new time-based wild Pokemon, and Pokemon Rides which replace HM’s.

What makes this one of the best Pokemon ROM hacks out there is due to the sheer amount of updates this game gets. It is actively maintained; there are frequent updates and bug fixes, and a sizable community exists to support you if you run into problems.

2. Pokemon Team Rocket Edition

Imagine if you were Team Rocket and you were playing the original Pokemon Red game. That was previously impossible, but the Pokemon fandom is so supportive that now it’s a reality!

Technically Pokemon Team Rocket Edition is a remake of Pokemon Fire Red, but it was a remake of Red, so I’ll let you decide on that one!

In this game, you play as a member of Team Rocket. Here you can meet several of the nefarious gang members while stealing and cheating your way to the top. This game will teach you more about Team Rocket than you ever thought possible, but I won’t give away too much of the plot because it’s one you have to experience for yourself.

You can take players’ Pokemon, meet some well-known characters from a new angle, and learn about a wide range of fan-based conspiracy theories.

This new twist on an old favorite is brilliant. My advice is to try this out if you enjoyed one of the finest games on the Gameboy Color.

3. Pokemon Light Platinum

Over 16 million copies of Pokemon Ruby/Sapphire were sold, attesting to the game’s popularity and success on the Gameboy Advance.

You should play Pokemon Light Platinum if you want a game based on that amazing game.

This Pokemon ROM Hack opens up not one, but two regions, Zhery and Lauren, for exploration. This rom hack’s legendary creator, WesleyFG, has included new gym leaders, the Elite Four, some familiar foes, and a large number of Pokemon from Kanto, Johto, Hoenn, Sinnoh, and Unova.

Wow, that’s a lot of Pokemon!

This game contains not just the ability to travel to different dimensions, but also the chance to capture every legendary Pokemon up to the region of Unova, and a massive final event known as the Pokemon World Championship.

When you’ve done this task, you’ll feel that the game is complete. If you own a copy of Ruby or Sapphire and are looking for a Pokemon ROM Hack, look no further!

4. Pokemon Gaia

The Pokemon fandom appears to have a thing with Fire Red hacks, and here’s another one—albeit one with a somewhat more substantial “twist.”

In the beginning of the ROM hack, Professor Redwood has noticed a rise in seismic activity and enlisted the help of the local Pokemon trainers in order to determine the cause.

Your squad in this game will feature members from multiple generations, as new Pokemon from Kanto, Johto, Hoenn, Sinnna, Unova, and even Kalos are introduced. They can be given cutting-edge training methods and even mega-evolved for combat as a result.

When compared to other Fire Red hacks, this one stands out for its updated sprites, moves, HMs, trainers, and building graphics.

Wall-climbing and underwater exploration are two of my favorite new features.

5. Pokemon Glazed

This is a game that I stumbled onto and truly loved. In Pokemon Glazed, an unexpected problem affects the entire region, leading to mystery and consternation.

While investigating ancient ruins, enigmatic Pokemon, and a scarfed Pikachu who’s angrier than a little chihuahua, you learn that a mystery power is bringing the Pokemon world and the real world closer together.

The Pokemon in your world come from the Tunod, Johto, and Rankor regions, making for a rather strange combination of Pokemon to collect after you reach the age of 12, and you get to choose from not three, not four, but five distinct starters.

The “Dream World” Pokemon introduced in this hacked ROM of the Pokemon video game may potentially provide some hints about the plot.

If new Pokemon wasn’t enough you can also catch all legendaries from Kanto through Sinnoh and eight more from the Unova region.

This is one to add to your collection if you’re seeking for more of the top Pokemon ROM hacks to add to your collection. My vote goes to the story.

6. Pokemon Dark Rising

Do you ever have dreams involving Pokemon that are incredibly strange? Yeah, me too, but picture if I asked you to help a Pokemon save the world in a dream-based video game.

That might sound like a nightmare to a normal person, but to me it sounds like the most incredible dream. That’s the premise of Pokemon Dark Rising, so when you tell your closest friend about it, he’ll probably tell you he had a similar dream.

Even while this ROM hack isn’t as “big” as others on the list, that in no way diminishes the quality of the gameplay it provides. Over 380 Pokemon hailing from Kanto, Johto, Hoenn, Sinnna, and Unova may be found in this game.

It adheres closely to the original Pokemon plot, complete with Gyms, villains, and puzzles. What really sets this ROM hack apart, though, is the fact that it incorporates modern-day Pokemon, moves, and features while maintaining a sleek visual style.

If you prefer the classic gameplay of previous generations yet enjoy additions like Dream World abilities, etc., then this ROM hack is for you.

7. Pokemon Flora Sky

My friends who have played it had nothing but praise for it, so I guess it’s good.

It all kicks off with a showdown between Dialga and Palkia, two legendary Pokemon in Pokemon Flora Sky. When the great battle is over, they’ll have left an open portal between the Town World and our world, which means Giratina will be free to cause havoc in the area.

Your mission is to stop Team Magma and Team Aqua from capturing legendary Pokemon and taking over the world by closing the portal before it’s too late.

The ROM hack introduces a brand-new tale and a slew of legendary Pokemon not seen in the original game, including Mew, Kyogre, Rayquaza, Shaymin, and more.

Over 380 Pokemon await you, along with additional minigames, moves, items, HMs, and a plethora of characters you’ll either love or despise.

As if that weren’t enough, they threw in a day/night system that makes things happen depending on the time of day and where you are in the game.

If you’re looking for a Pokemon ROM hack with a straightforward plot, this is one of the better options. One in which you can kick back and take it easy while participating in.

8. Pokemon Brown

The Pokemon ROM hack known as “Pokemon Brown” has been around for a long time and is therefore well-known. The game is based on the original Gameboy game, albeit the plot has been tweaked slightly.

The game is set in the brand-new area of Rijon and features over 20 brand-new routes and 10 new cities (including 1 in the Johto region). There are now seven Pokemon types available that weren’t available in Pokemon Red and Blue.

Visualize a brand-new area of Pokemon Red, complete with fresh faces, new Pokemon, unique tunes, breathtaking vistas, and a massive plot you’ve never heard of before. That’s Brown, the Pokemon.

Although it may seem neglected in comparison to other ROM hacks, the fact that it is already a fantastic game with few areas for improvement means that it actually receives fewer updates.

The uniqueness and nostalgia-inducing vintage vibe of the 1990s that this ROM hack captures is a major selling point for many.

9. Pokemon Prism

Pokemon Prism is not only one of the oldest ROM hacks, but also one of the best Pokemon ROM hacks, and as a result, it has gained a lot of attention from Pokemon fans.

The plot follows a little child who, while playing on their uncle’s mining cart, has an accident that sends them to an unfamiliar place named Naljo. The area is corrupt, but you manage to track down a missing Larvitar who aids you in restoring order to Naljo.

Amazingly, this region is far larger than Johto, housing over 250 Pokemon from four separate regions and expanding the types available to include Fairy, Gas, and Sound. It’s beyond us why Nintendo hasn’t thought of using sound as a font yet.

Like with any ROM hack, as you progress through the game you will encounter riddles, new locations, legendary Pokemon, and a currency known as Gold Coins, which can be used to purchase or otherwise acquire a variety of useful items.

Spend them wisely, for there are only 80 total in the game.

And if it weren’t enough to set it apart from similar ROM hacks, the inclusion of crafts, new minigames, and side-scrolling zones should do the trick!

10. Pokemon Phoenix Rising

Phoenix Rising is an episode-based, fan-made Pokémon RPG powered by RPG Maker XP and Pokémon Essentials.

The game takes place in a new location called Hawthorne and incorporates alterations to the standard Pokémon main series concept, such as a more traditional RPG atmosphere and a plethora of new features.

Put simply, this is a top-tier Pokemon ROM hack. Everyone involved should be quite pleased with the results of their labors.

That game seems so fresh that you could easily convince me that Game Freak created it on their own. The visual style is reminiscent of the Nintendo DS, making it appear significantly more up-to-date than the majority of the games here.

Multiple save files, branching skill trees, and player-determined plot twists are just a few of the fascinating aspects of this ROM hack.

Mega-evolutions, evolutions of regions, and relic forms are the cherry on top. There are many powerful Pokémon just waiting to be captured, like as Mega Arcanine, Ho-Oh in his Arisen Form, Mega Flygon, Relic Tentacruel, and many more!

The only drawback is that it’s still in its early stages and just episode 1 has been released, so just as you start to become hooked, you’ll find out that there isn’t any more content to enjoy. Team members are hard at work on additional episodes, but as is the case with any ROM hack, they are not being compensated for their efforts.
