On August 14, 1947, in New York, New York, a girl named Danielle Fernandes Dominique Schuelein-Steel entered the world. She was born in Germany to a German father and a Portuguese mother and spent much of her childhood in France, where she was exposed to high society through her parent’s numerous dinner parties.
The Schülein family, makers of Löwenbräu beer, were ancestors of John’s, while Norma was the daughter of a Portuguese ambassador.
When Danielle was eight years old, her parents, John and Norma, split up, and she seldom saw her mother again. Steel attended the Lycée Français de New York and was raised by her father in the Big Apple. She earned her diploma in 1965.
