Michael Charles Leach, born on March 9, 1961, is the head coach of the Mississippi State Bulldogs football team in the NCAA. While at Texas Tech University, he amassed the most wins of any coach in school history from 2000 to 2009.
From 2012 to 2019, as head coach at Washington State University, he earned the third-most wins of any coach in school history. He joined the Latter-day Saints at his birthplace of Susanville, California.
Leach did not play collegiate football, but he did play wide receiver for the long-time Cody High School head coach, John McDougall. Early Coaching Career
Cal Poly and College of the Desert were the first two schools that Leach worked at as an assistant coach, beginning in 1987. In 1989, he led the Pori Bears of the American Football Association of Finland as their head coach. In 1989, he became the offensive coordinator for Hal Mumme’s team at Iowa Wesleyan University.
They stayed for three years before moving on to Valdosta State (1992–1996) and then Kentucky (1997–1998). The duo became well-known for creating the air raid offense, which helped their teams achieve unprecedented success on offense.
Tim Couch, the quarterback for the University of Kentucky, was selected first overall in the NFL draft. When the 1999 season rolled around, Leach was on board with the Sooners to help out Bob Stoops. In 1998, Oklahoma’s offense ranked 11th in the Big 12 Conference. Under Leach, it ranked first.
Texas Tech
Leach only stayed at Oklahoma for a year before moving on to coach another Big 12 team, the Texas Tech Red Raiders. In 2002, 2005, and 2007, the Red Raiders finished with nine victories each year, while in 2008, they won eleven games. After beating Clemson, 55-15, in the Tangerine Bowl in 2002, Tech went on to win the national championship.
This was the first time since 1997 that Tech has swept its in-state conference rivals Baylor, Texas, and Texas A&M. When the Red Raiders defeated the Air Force Falcons in the Copper Bowl in 1995, it was their first playoff victory in almost a decade.
It wasn’t until 2005 that the Red Raiders had their greatest start to a season since 1998 when they went 6-0 to begin the year. Through Leach’s leadership, Tech’s passing offense grew to become the best in the nation for four consecutive seasons.
