Early life and Career
Selena Quintanilla was born in Lake Jackson, Texas, on April 16, 1971. She was the youngest child of Marcella Ofelia Quintanilla, who was part Cherokee, and Abraham Quintanilla Jr., who used to be a musician and was Mexican American. Ron Paul, who will soon be a member of Congress, was the doctor who helped deliver her.
Selena grew up in a Jehovah’s Witness family. When she was six, Quintanilla Jr. noticed that she was good at music. He told People magazine, “Her timing and her pitch were perfect, and I knew it from the first day.” In 1980, Quintanilla Jr. opened his first Tex-Mex restaurant in Lake Jackson called Papa Gayo’s.
Selena and her siblings Abraham III (who played bass guitar) and Suzette Quintanilla (who played drums) would often play there. After the 1980s oil glut caused a recession, the restaurant had to close the next year.
The family went bankrupt, so they had to leave their home. They moved to Corpus Christi, Texas, and Quintanilla Jr. became the manager of Selena y Los Dinos, a new band, and started getting the word out about it. They played on street corners, at weddings, quinceaeras, and fairs to make money because they needed it.
