Fans of Harry Potter and the Wizarding World will be disappointed to learn that Hogwarts Legacy will not be a Christmas surprise this year. It looks like rewatching the flicks (or starting over with the Philosopher’s Stone on the PS1) is the only way to satisfy our Potter cravings.
It’s a real bummer because the film promises a stunningly original take on a setting that feels all too familiar. The role-playing game is based on the fictional school Hogwarts and takes place in the nineteenth century, allowing players to create a character, join a house, and experience the campus as it would have looked back then.
The visuals are stunning, and the gameplay appears polished, with lots of minigames to keep us occupied. If you’re interested in learning more about the game, keep reading. Everything from the gameplay to the story to the delays that were previously announced.

On February 10, 2023, PS5, Xbox Series X, and PC will all be able to get their hands on Hogwarts Legacy. Customers who pre-order the game can get in three days early, beginning on February 7, 2023.

Unfortunately, the release of Hogwarts Legacy for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch has been postponed. According to WB Games, the PS4 and Xbox One versions of Hogwarts Legacy won’t be released until April 4, 2023, while the Switch edition won’t arrive until July 25, 2023.
The publisher has explained the delay by saying, “The team is looking forward to bringing you the game and we want to create the finest possible game experience across all platforms.”

Platforms
Hogwarts Legacy will be available on PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 3, Nintendo Switch, and Xbox One. Warner Bros. has not yet stated whether or not the Nintendo Switch release would be a cloud-based implementation.
The other major 2022 release from Warner Bros., Gotham Knights, stopped developing for and supporting last-gen platforms back in May and will now just release on current-gen consoles, but there has been no word on whether or not Hogwarts Legacy will do the same.
It’s true that Hogwarts Legacy makes use of the power of modern gaming systems. The PS5 version of Hogwarts Legacy will make use of DualSense, and the game’s adaptive triggers will offer protection relative to the spell’s difficulty.
A light on the controller will flash the colors of your selected Hogwarts house, and DualSense haptic stimulation will be enabled. With the current-gen console’s solid-state drive (SSD), the game will also support Fidelity and Performance modes, allowing for speedier loading times.
What is the Hogwarts Legacy story?
The official overview says: “Explore Hogwarts as it was in the nineteenth century. Your wizarding world-threatening figure is a student who knows an ancient secret. Cooperate with like-minded wizards, engage in epic battles against evil mages, and determine the future of the magical world.”
This is essentially Hogwarts, but one that existed long before Harry Potter was even a child. Also, while this is clearly influenced by the books we’ve all read for years, J.K. Rowling has no hand in it and this is not a brand-new plot.
Gameplay footage released recently revealed that both the player’s character’s appearance and gender would be up for grabs. This protagonist will enter Hogwarts as a fifth-year student and will have access to lost magic that no one else can utilize.

Your character will encounter Dark Wizards and look into rumors of a goblin uprising throughout the course of the game. If that’s the case, you’ll have a full schedule between work and school, let alone trying to catch up to your more seasoned classmates.
Multiplayer
There are no multiplayer or cooperative features in Hogwarts Legacy. Officially, “Hogwarts Legacy is a single-player experience and does not offer internet or co-op gaming,” as stated in the game’s Frequently Asked Questions section.
Hogwarts Legacy features a large cast of playable characters, including a number of wizards and pupils, but they are all non-player characters. Even though it’s a single-player game, you won’t be alone because there will be playable characters with names you can get to know.
Gameplay
In the main game, you can cast spells from a third-person perspective and engage in combat while dodging and rolling. Spells taught in the classroom will be essential for surviving battles and figuring out the mazes that pepper Hogwarts and its environs.
Herbalism and potions allow you to make weapons like screaming Mandrakes and potions to employ in battle. Classes aren’t the only way to improve your wizard’s power; there’s also magical stuff you may collect and equip.
Each player in Hogwarts Legacy has access to dozens of spells, allowing them to create their own unique spell repertoire based on their preferred balance of offense and defense. Avada Kedavra, one of the Unforgivable Curses, is briefly shown being cast by the player character in the PlayStation State of Play for Hogwarts Legacy, suggesting that you may be able to lead your wizard down a dark path.

Microtransactions
It has been confirmed that there will be no microtransactions in Hogwarts Legacy. Hogwarts Legacy does not feature any kind of microtransactions or in-app purchases, as stated in the game’s official Frequently Asked Questions section.
If that weren’t enough to convince you, Avalanche community manager Chandler Wood confirmed on Twitter that there will be no microtransactions in Hogwarts Legacy. This doesn’t mean that there won’t be post-launch paid DLC, but it does confirm that you won’t need to shell out actual cash to get those nice wizard robes.
