Gene Rayburn was an American radio and television personality who was born Eugene Peter Jeljenic on December 22, 1917 and died on November 29, 1999. His most well-known role is as the long-running host of different iterations of the American game show Match Game.

Personal Life and Death

Rayburn was married to Helen Ticknor from 1940 until she died in October 1996. They had one kid, a daughter.

One of Rayburn’s last TV appearances was a 1998 interview with Access Hollywood. The interview was meant to mark the 25th anniversary of Match Game ’73. Parts of the interview have been shown again on Game Show Network, which in 2001 showed parts of another interview that hadn’t been seen before during the first broadcast of its Match Game Blankathon.

Rayburn called himself a liberal on a political level, and he was a supporter of Planned Parenthood. Rayburn was also worried that overpopulation would become a problem in the 21st century and that it would be harder to provide resources like food if the population grew too big.

He talked about these worries during Game Show Hosts Week on Card Sharks in 1980, when he played for Planned Parenthood as his favorite charity.

Rayburn liked needlepoint and did it often on his many flights to and from California. He started doing it when he knitted socks as a joke for Rayburn and Finch. Mark Goodson gave him a needlepoint kit on air as a gift when Match Game became the most popular daytime TV show.

Even though he was sick and had dementia, Rayburn showed up in person to accept a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences. A month later, on November 29, 1999, he died of heart failure at his daughter’s home in Gloucester, Massachusetts. He was 81. He was cremated, and his ashes were spread in the garden of his daughter’s home.

Rayburn’s last TV appearance was in an interview for an A&E Biography episode about the life of his longtime boss, Mark Goodson. The interview was taped in late 1999, but the episode didn’t air until June 4, 2000, several months after Rayburn had died.

His late wife Helen Ticknor, who died in 1996, gave birth to Rayburn’s daughter Lynne, who is his only child. Rayburn died, and his ashes were scattered across Lynne’s yard after being cremated.
