Naomi Osaka was born on October 16, 1997, to Leonard François and Tamaki Osaka in the Japanese city of Ch-Ku, Osaka.
Her father is from Haiti’s Jacmel, while her mother is from Nemuro, Hokkaido, Japan. Mari, her older sister, used to play tennis professionally. For practical reasons when the family was living in Japan, the two girls were given their mother’s family name. When Osaka’s father visited Hokkaido while he was a college student in New York, her parents got to know one another.
