Adding humor to a historical situation enhances its significance. On Tuesday night, LeBron James surpassed Michael Jordan as the NBA’s all-time leading scorer. This achievement was received with honors from other renowned athletes and A-list celebrities and entertainers. Drake, another famous rapper, wasn’t about to be outdone, so he spruced up his with a little of humor.
Drake, star of the Los Angeles Lakers and a basketball icon in his own right, was shown congratulating James in a video shared by Sportsnet. In it, he claimed to have visited Akron, Ohio, James’ hometown. Then the green screen was shown, and he admitted he had been lying about not being at the Miami club.
There will be many expressions of love and support for James in the coming days, but one that is certain to stand out is Drake’s jab at Akron and the Cleveland Cavaliers as a whole. The city is not widely known for its lively nightlife. Over a decade ago, Joakim Noah put it more bluntly: “I’ve never heard somebody say I’m coming to Cleveland on vacation.”

The addition of references to Miami ties the tribute together, as James shocked the sports world by leaving the Miami Heat for the Cavaliers in 2014. It all worked out, though, as LeBron James’ 2016 NBA title run was probably the pinnacle of his career.
While James will need some time to reflect on the Lakers’ 133-130 loss to the Thunder, the season is still young. Even if their team fell further behind in the postseason race, the sold-out crowd at Crypto.com Arena can rest easy tonight.
That may be LeBron’s most significant effect. At this point, it doesn’t matter that there are plenty of other problems with the franchise.
Still, Drake might jog his memory about the Lakers’ position in the Western Conference.
