Is the Movie

The American Terrorist Drama The empathetic yet enthralling plot of John Q kept viewers on the edge of their seats. This film from director Nick Cassavetes came out in 2002. The film follows a man whose son is told he requires a heart transplant. However, his insurance company is not willing to pay for such a major procedure.

Taking captive the physicians and patients in the ER, he demands that they do the procedure. For the hostages’ safe release, he requires that his kid be added to the organ donor list.

Is the Movie “John Q.” Based on A Real Story?

Even though John Q. came out in 2002, it is still very relevant in 2020 because many people still have trouble getting coverage for certain medical procedures and devices. Even though we all know that holding up a hospital and putting people in cages to get medical help is a pretty extreme thing to do, it’s not hard to see John Q. as the good guy stuck in a bad system. He is definitely a likable person.

If you want to know if John Q. was based on a true story, the answer is sort of yes and no. In short, the movie wasn’t based on something that really happened. There was no real John Q. Public.

Listening to the film’s commentary track, though, you’ll find out that a similar event happened in Toronto in 1998, led by director Nick Cassavetes and writer James Kearnes. Before the film’s SWAT team advisors gave Nick and James the backstory, they had no idea.

Similarly to John Q, Masuka insisted that the doctors attend to his newborn kid immediately. Masuka, like John, was brandishing a pellet gun that had yet to be loaded. But the cops were unable to evaluate the issue in all its complexity.

Thus, the Toronto Police Emergency Task Force killed Masuka because they believed he was a danger to the ER staff and patients. But when we look at the big picture, it appears the filmmaker made an extra effort to make the film believable.
