Last year, the limited series Pam & Tommy told the story of Pamela Anderson’s relationship with her ex-husband, Tommy Lee, and how their troubled marriage ended. But why did Pamela and Tommy really get a divorce?
The miniseries, which is about the high-profile sex-tape scandal involving Pamela and Tommy in the 1990s, is known for not including any input from Pamela or Tommy. A new Netflix documentary about Pamela Anderson tries to make up for this by letting Pam tell her own story.
The Reason for Pamela Anderson and Tommy Lee’s Breakup.
Pamela claims in her new memoir, Love, Pamela, that the night in February 1998 when Tommy was arrested for spousal violence was the night “hell began” for her. She claims that while carrying their 7-month-old son Dylan, Tommy repeatedly kicked Pamela in the back.
She added, “We were both upset, but I had to protect my babies,” adding, “I still couldn’t believe that the person I loved the most was capable of what had happened that night.”
Why Did Tommy and Pam End Their Relationship?
It’s possible that the sex tape between Pam and Tommy played a factor in the breakdown of their relationship. Not long after their wedding, their former electrician, Rand Gauthier, broke into their home and seized the video from a safe, alleging that Tommy owed him $20,000.
The tape quickly went viral, selling out in minutes and fetching $59.95 a pop on the internet. They started suing everyone they thought might have a copy in 1996.
After a litigation over the physical distribution of the tape was resolved, hundreds of thousands of copies of the private movie were sold online, making it one of the first things to go “viral” online.
It’s understandable that having something so private and made public would put a strain on a marriage, but it’s also evident that the recording wasn’t the only factor contributing to their separation.
What Date Did Pamela Anderson File for Divorce from Tommy Lee?
Two days after the attack, on February 26, 1998, the actress filed for divorce, citing “irreconcilable disagreements.” She hoped to gain sole legal and physical custody of the couple’s two young boys.
