Jewel Kilcher was born in Payson, Utah, on May 23, 1974. She grew up in an Anchorage, Alaska, Mormon family with her mother Lenedra, father Attila (aka Atz Kilcher), older brother Shane, and younger brother Atz Jr.
When Lenedra and Attila got a divorce in 1981, the family stopped going to church. Niko, Jewel’s half-brother, is Atz’s son from a previous relationship. After her parents got a divorce, Jewel was raised by her stepfather, Atz, in Homer, Alaska, in a house without indoor plumbing.
She sometimes played music with her father, who taught her how to yodel, in taverns and hotels in Anchorage. After getting a partial scholarship, Jewel went to Interlochen Arts Academy in Michigan to study operatic voice and guitar.
