What Does “SOS” Mean on an iPhone?
The SOS sign in the status bar of your iPhone means that you no longer have a good cellular connection and that you can only make an SOS call or text to emergency services. If you lose even SOS service on an iPhone 13 or lower, it will change to “No service.”
Since the iPhone 14 added satellite SOS, you shouldn’t see that message unless you are cave diving or deep sea diving with your iPhone 14 or later.

How Can SOS on an iPhone Be Fixed?
The easy answer is to move back to a place where service is better. But if you’re in a place where you’ve had a connection before, it’s possible that your phone isn’t registering the link correctly.
In this case, swipe down from the top right corner of your screen and tap the green Cellular Data button to turn it off. Tap it again to turn it back on. If that doesn’t remind your iPhone that it should have a good link, you can soft reset your iPhone.
Hold down the side button and the lower volume button at the same time for about 3 seconds to get a new screen with two sliders and a stop icon. Slide the power button at the top to the right to turn off your phone.
Wait a few seconds, then press the side button to turn it back on. That should be it. If you are near a link, your phone should find it and take the SOS off your status bar.

Restart Your iPhone
Due to a bug, the SOS icon could sometimes show up. Just restart your iPhone to fix it. Press and hold the Power button until the Power slider appears. If you move the bar to the right, your iPhone will shut down. Wait a few seconds, and then press the Power button to turn your iPhone back on.

Check Network
The main reason your iPhone’s SOS button shows up is because of a bad network. So, try moving somewhere else. Move to a different room or, if that’s not possible, a different place with a good network service.

Re-Insert SIM
Next, you’ll need to take the SIM card out of your iPhone. Then, use a soft cloth to clean it, and put it back in your iPhone. This fix is a good way to get rid of the SOS text on an iPhone.

Stop Using Cell Phone Data

Make sure that internet roaming is turned on on your iPhone if you are going somewhere other than the state or country where your SIM card was bought.

So, your iPhone will choose the right network for your SIM immediately. Go to Settings, then Cellular data (Mobile data), then Network option. Flip the switch next to Automatic on. If it’s already on, you should turn it off and then back on.

Enable LTE
Some companies, like AT&T, are getting rid of their older networks, like 3G, over time. If you have Voice & data set to 3G, the SOS sign could show up in the status bar.
To turn it off, you just need to move to a newer network. Go to Settings > Cellular data > Cellular data choices > Voice & data. Choose a mode other than the one you’re in. LTE should also be turned on.

Update Your iPhone and Carrier Settings
Getting the SOS symbol on your iPhone could be a sign that there is a problem with the network. This could be because you have old settings for your service. To turn it off, you have to directly change your carrier settings.
In the same way, you should update iOS to the most recent version.
Go to Settings > General > About to see if there are any changes for either of them. Make sure you have a Wi-Fi connection. If there is an update for your iPhone, you should install it.
