Benjamin Lloyd Crump is an American lawyer who focuses on civil rights and serious personal harm cases, such as lawsuits for wrongful death.
His practice has focused on cases like those of Trayvon Martin, Michael Brown, George Floyd, Keenan Anderson, and Tyre Nichols.
He has also helped people affected by the Flint water crisis and the plaintiffs in the 2019 Johnson & Johnson baby powder lawsuit, which claims that the company’s talcum powder product caused ovarian cancer diagnoses.
Crump also started the Tallahassee, Florida, law company Ben Crump Law. In 2020, Ahmaud Arbery, Breonna Taylor, George Floyd, and Jacob Blake all hired Crump as their lawyer.
In 2021, he started working as an attorney for a person who was in the car with Winston Boogie Smith and for Daunte Wright’s family. Protests against police abuse happened in the U.S. and around the world because their cases were still going on.
Because of how well he is known as a lawyer, he has been called “Black America’s attorney general.”
Early Life
Ben Crump was born on October 10, 1969, in Lumberton, North Carolina. Crump had a lot of ups and downs as a kid. First of all, his mother and father split up when he was very young.
He was the ninth of ten kids, and his mother worked too much to take care of all of them. The children would stay with their grandma until they graduated from high school.
Ben Crump’s mother thought it would be best for him to live with her new husband when he turned sixteen. This new husband was also a math teacher, and Ben learned to love learning from him.
The new family lived in South Florida in a place called Plantation. Here, Ben Crump went to South Plantation High School, which is a very good school. His teacher quickly learned that Ben Crump was very smart.
The young boy did very well in all of his classes and took part in a lot of school events. He applied to Florida State University at the right time, and they let him in.
Here, Ben Crump got his Bachelor of Arts in criminal justice in 1992 and his Juris Doctor in 1995. He has also been a part of the Omega Psi Phi fraternity for his whole life.

In 2002, when Benjamin Crump’s work began, African-Americans were being killed and hurt. In 2002, Crump was the lawyer for the family of Genie McMeans, Jr., who was shot and killed by a white State Trooper.
In 2007, he was the lawyer for the family of Trayvon Martin, who was killed by George Zimmerman in 2012. Other cases involved police brutality.
These included defending the family of Alesia Thomas, a 35-year-old African-American woman who died in police custody in August 2012, and Ronald Weekley Jr., a 20-year-old skateboarder who was beaten by police in Venice.
In 2014, many people drew parallels between the deaths of Trayvon Martin and Michael Brown. His family said that they were going to hire Crump to help them. After this, the family of Tamir Rice also hired Crump.

Cases From 2015 to 2019

In 2016, Crump worked for the family of Terence Crutcher, a black man who was helpless when a Tulsa police officer shot and killed him. He then worked for the family of Zeke Upshaw.
During this time, Crump said that he would open a new law company in 2017 called Ben Crump Law, PLLC. The next year, Crump joined the National Black Justice Coalition’s Board of Directors. Crump joined forces with the law firm Pintas & Mullins in 2019.
Together, they held a number of rallies in Flint, Michigan, for the people who were hurt by the water disaster there.

In 2020, Crump worked for the family of Ahmad Arbery, a 25-year-old African-American man who was killed by two white citizens while he was unarmed.
Then, in May of that same year, he defended the family of George Floyd, a 46-year-old African-American man who was killed reportedly by a Minneapolis Police Department officer while he was unarmed.
Later in the year, in August, he was one of the lawyers for the family of Trayford Pellerin, an African American man who was killed by police in Lafayette, Louisiana. Pellerin was 31 years old.
Also, the family of 29-year-old African American Jacob Blake was shot seven times by a Wisconsin police officer. Crump was the lawyer for the family of Christian Hall, a 19-year-old Asian-American who was shot and killed by Pennsylvania State Troopers in Monroe County in 2021.
