Twitter blocks some tweets with a “potentially sensitive content” warning, even if you are retweeting them. This message can be turned off, even on an iPhone or iPad. You can also turn off warnings for tweets with sensitive information without making your account private.
What Exactly is “Sensitive Content?”
Twitter says that this warning mark is for “potentially sensitive content, such as violence or nudity.” To say it straight out, Twitter is a more open social network than Facebook.
Twitter’s policy on sensitive media says that “extremely gory” media, “media depicting sexual violence,” and illegal material are not allowed, but almost everything else is.
By default, Twitter blocks this media with a warning like “This media may contain sensitive material,” “This profile may contain potentially sensitive content,” or “The following media contains potentially sensitive content.”
If you don’t have a Twitter account, you’ll need to make one and sign in to change this setting.
How to Get Around the “Sensitive Content” Message?
You turn off the warning about Sensitive Content in Twitter’s privacy settings. These choices are also in the same place in the Android app, but not in the Twitter app for iPhone and iPad.
If you change the setting on the web, however, the Twitter apps for the iPhone and iPad will show you sensitive material without any warnings.
To turn off the warning, go to Twitter.com and click the “More” button, which looks like three dots in a circle, on the left side of the screen.
Next, choose “Settings and Privacy” from the menu that pops up.
Choose “Privacy and Safety” from the list on the left, and then click “Content You See.”
Check the box next to “Display Media That May Contain Sensitive Content” near the top of the screen to turn off the warning for tweets.
How to Search for “Sensitive Content”
Tweets with private information are usually hidden from searches, but you can make them visible if you want to.
In the same way as above, you can take these steps in the Twitter app for Android. However, you can’t change this setting on iPhone or iPad.
To do this, go to Twitter’s website and hit More > Settings and Privacy > Privacy and Safety > Content You See > Search Settings. Uncheck “Hide Sensitive Content” in this box.
How to Get the Warning Off Your Own Tweets
Choose More > Settings and Privacy > Privacy and Safety > Your Tweets to stop Twitter from marking the files you post as sensitive. Make sure that “Mark media you tweet as containing material that may be sensitive” is not checked.
This choice is available on Twitter’s website and in the Android app, but not in the iPhone and iPad apps.
Don’t worry if you don’t want to see sensitive information. That’s how Twitter is set up by default. Just make sure that “Display Media That May Contain Sensitive Content” is turned off and “Hide Sensitive Content” is turned on for results.
