Shannen Maria Doherty was born on April 12, 1971, in Memphis, Tennessee. Rosa, her mother, ran a beauty salon, and Tom, her father, worked in the banking business. She grew up in a Southern Baptist family. She comes from Ireland, England, and Scotland.
Early Career
Shannen Doherty began playing when she was young. In 1982, she appeared on Michael Landon’s shows Voyagers! and Father Murphy as a guest star. In the same year, she was cast as Jenny Wilder, a recurring character on the show Little House on the Prairie, which Landon appeared in and produced.
In the last season of Little House on the Prairie, she was in all but four shows. She did voice work for the cartoon movie The Secret of NIMH in 1982 as well.
In the 1985 teen comedy Girls Just Want to Have Fun, she played Maggie Malone with Helen Hunt and Sarah Jessica Parker. Doherty was chosen to play Kris Witherspoon, the oldest child, in the 1986–1988 drama Our House.

Doherty’s first big movie part was Heather Duke in the 1988 movie Heathers. Beverly Hills 90210 made her and the rest of the group famous all over the world in 1990.
She played Brenda Walsh, a newcomer to Beverly Hills who moved there with her brother Brandon Walsh, who was played by Jason Priestly.
