Sidney got a new job as a dishwasher when he got back to regular life. But he also started trying out for different parts in the theater. Eventually, he joined the American Negro Theater. But his first acts on stage did not go well at all.
He couldn’t sing, and his Bahamian accent was still clear. He spent the next six months getting better at acting because he was determined to do well. This made him a much better main man in a Broadway production of the play “Lysistrata.”
After this success, Sidney continued to get a lot of leading parts in Broadway shows. By the end of the 1940s, he was also being asked to be in movies like “No Way Out.” This movie got him started in the movie business, and from then on, he did more and more movies.
“Blackboard Jungle,” which came out in 1955, was the movie that gave him his big break in Hollywood. After that, he played parts in movies like “Goodbye, My Lady” and “The Defiant Ones.”
